I’ve made no bones about being a big Phil Ward fan. His work with Death & Co and at Mayahuel. I think this is the 4th or 5th recipe of his that I’ve displayed on my page. I guess you can say that I’m a believer!

I wanted to specifically display this drink because it shows exactly what I mean… Old Fashioneds at one point used to be a way in which you ordered your drink. This becomes very obvious to why when you comb through Harry Johnson’s cocktail manual. As beautiful as they are, every lithograph of the cocktails he displays in his book are drowning in garnishes. The Old Fashioned was originally a “Whiskey Cocktail” made the old fashioned way, without all the garnishes. So when you take that into an account, I become a firm believer in that Old Fashioneds don’t need to made from whiskey at all - and to prove that point, here’s a wonderful old fashioned using a new American gin, elderflower liqueur, and a couple dashes of orange bitters. What the result is - is a spirit forward cocktail like any old fashioned, but this lands more on floral with sweet notes of melon and pear that rounds out the gin, finished up by a crisp pine and grapefruit-like finish.

Elder Fashion - (C.2007 - Phil Ward)

60ml - 5 Rocks Lizzy’s New American Gin
15ml - St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
2 Dash - Dashfire Vintage Barrel Aged Orange Bitters

• Stir & strain into a Chatos glass (300ml) over a large cube.
• Garnish with a zest of grapefruit.

Cheers! Kanpai! Skål!

A must-visit while exploring Boston!
Boston General Store is filled with thoughtfully curated goods that make it nearly impossible to leave empty-handed.

Their incredible selection of specialty bitters, cocktail syrups, and beautiful barware immediately caught our attention—but there is so much more to discover. From gorgeous stationery and notebooks to unique home goods, kitchen essentials, gifts, and everyday treasures, every corner holds something special.

Of course, a couple of goodies followed us home: Dashfire Allspice Bitters and Chai’Walla Chai Bitters. We’re already thinking of future cocktail, mocktail, and coffee creations featuring these warm, aromatic flavors. Stay tuned to see what we create!

It’s the perfect stop for cocktail lovers, creative minds, gift hunters, and anyone who appreciates beautifully made goods with a story behind them.

This month’s copy of Imbibe Magazine features two riffs on one of my favorite cocktails, the Boulevardier. Part of the “Hand” family of cocktails, the Right Hand, by Michael McElroy, and the Left Hand, by Sam Ross, were created at Milk and Honey in New York City back in 2005 to showcase the then-new Mole Chocolate bitters. I’m showcasing Dashfire Mole Bitters and Cueva Nueva Spanish Vermut in my versions. (Yes, there are two. Swipe left to see them both

Are you left-handed, right-handed, or perhaps ambidextrous?

Left Hand

1 ½ oz bourbon (I used Michter’s Small Batch Bourbon)
¾ oz sweet vermouth (I used Cueva Nueva Spanish Vermut)
¾ oz Campari
2 dashes mole chocolate bitters (I used Dashfire Mole Bitters)

Right Hand

I ½ oz aged rum (I used Angostura 7 yr Caribbean Rum)
¾ oz sweet vermouth (I used Cueva Nueva Spanish Vermut)
¾ oz Campari
2 dashes mole chocolate bitters (I used Dashfire Mole Bitters)

Stir / Left Hand Up with cherry / Right Hand Rocks with expressed orange peel
