Are you human?

Then stop proving it to machines.
Start proving it in the way you make.

MAIAD is a master for artists, designers, and creative minds who want to build, dissect, prototype, and provoke with AI. Not to automate creativity, but to question it, bend it, train it, break its defaults, and create work with intention.

Because in a world of prompts and automated answers, human agency becomes a creative and radical position.

Verifying you are human.

Calling all young creative professionals interesting in data collection 📣

We’re launching an open call for a 10-day artistic & research residency in Pisa, Italy, happening from the 1st to the 10th of October 2026. The residency is run in tandem with the Internet Festival (9-12th October).

Travel, accommodation, and meals are covered ✈️🍝

The big question it’s all about: what if getting to know your audience didn’t feel like a survey?

We’ll be picking 10 creatives under 30 to explore new ways of engaging people through data, participation, and artistic innovation. If you work somewhere in between design, art, research, communication, or anything that touches the space between people and information - this one is for you 🎯

For years, we’ve been developing “info-experiences”: participatory formats that generate real insights without ever feeling like questionnaires. Now we’re opening that practice up: with ten days to experiment, build, and test ideas with real audiences - working side by side with us.

Co-funded by the EU, applications are open, link in bio 🚀

🗺️ In a world where Google Street View maps nearly every inch of territory, the idea of a “map” takes on a different shape. Complexity doesn’t end at borders—it multiplies when we look closer. So what does mapping mean in the age of AI and algorithmic vision?

That’s what we wrote about in Phantom Cartography, featured in @the.ai.art.magazine Issue Nº2: CRITICAL INTELLIGENCE—narratives under the machine 🖥️

A beautiful print magazine gathering visual + written work from artists and thinkers using AI as a space of dissidence, resistance, and subversion. It’s a huge honour for us to be part of this archive. You can order your copy online - link in bio to the AI Art Magazine website 🔗

What can a small gesture tell us about history? Over the past year, we’ve been exploring how movement becomes memory - and how AI might help us notice the echoes we carry without knowing 🧠

This has morphed into our Uncoded Gestures project, which was put on display, back in May at the @paloaltobarcelona centre in Barcelona, where we trained our prototype to match the gestures of visitors with the gestures of individuals in the images from the Poblenou historical archives.

🔥 From the beloved Catalan correfoc - where dancers spin sparks in the streets, celebrating community and culture - to fiery clashes at protests, fire has a deep and complex meaning across different contexts. But what happens when AI fails to recognize this nuance?

💥 “Not All Sparks Are Equal” was a projection mapping in which we explored how AI surveillance systems flatten these complexities, turning fire into a mere data point, unable to distinguish between a festival and a riot. Through AI-driven visuals, our projection visually represented how algorithms misinterpret human activities, equating celebration with chaos.

The dangers of this misrecognition are real. Following the 2017 G20 protests in Hamburg, German police used facial recognition to analyze over 100 terabytes of footage, thereby prosecuting protesters. Similarly, at the Notting Hill Carnival, police deployed facial recognition on 100,000 attendees. These systems didn’t see the people—they saw pixels and patterns, losing the cultural context behind these acts.

This project highlights the profound limitations of surveillance technologies, urging us to question how we allow machines to interpret our public spaces. Should we let AI decide what’s safe and what’s threatening? What’s lost when technology overlooks the richness of human experience?

The projection mapping, displayed on the facade of the Design Hub during the evenings of the 2025 OFFF Festival in Barcelona, was a call for more mindful AI - one that grasps context and respects the complexity of our world views 🚨

🔥 Watch the full “Not All Sparks Are Equal” projection mapping!
Originally displayed on the Design Hub in Barcelona during the OFFF Festival (May 2025), this piece combines video archives and AI-driven visuals to explore how AI surveillance systems might strip away context, equating the flames of celebration with the fires of conflict. A call for more mindful technology that understands the complexity of human expression - we’ll be sharing more about the project in days to come, so stay tuned for more info! 💥

WORKSHOP: AI Sabotage Lab w/ Maria Costa Graell + Marta Handenawer + Joana Bisbe 🦊 May 1 @ 16:00

This session is brought to you with the support of Elisava, Master in Applied AI for Arts and Design.

During the workshop “AI Sabotage Lab”, we’ll critically explore how artificial intelligence impacts cultural storytelling, focusing on the risks of narrative homogenization. Participants are invited to choose a folkloric story from their background and, by “misusing” AI, we’ll discover how it can unintentionally amplify universalising biases and categorise complex cultural narratives into simplified, homogeneous forms.

What will we learn during this workshop?
1. To explore different perspectives on how to create with these tools.
2. To translate a typical folklore story from our own cultures into a new artistic format.

💻 Bring your laptop and your favourite local folklore and, if you want, a couple of pictures too. AI n00b (total beginner) friendly!*

Want to learn more about Elisava? Find Marta Handenawer (co-director of the Master’s in Applied AI for Arts and Design) and Andrés Colmenares (director of the Master’s Design for Responsible AI) around the festival 🍏
