In the spirit of better late than never…

Thank you @betawards voters for nominating Number One on the Call Sheet in the BEST MOVIE category!!! As the only documentary, it is an enormous honor to be in the mix of all the nominees. Congrats to @sinnersmovie for the win!

THANKS to all my creative partners!! While long overdue, it is fully heartfelt. I/we put our foot into making this two-part documentary. It was hard. But we knew this chance would not come up again.

It has been personally meaningful to tell the women’s story. While I/we brought the craft — it could only be as good as your stories. Just know, any/all accolades are for you!

THANK YOU… @im.angelabassett, @halleberry, @violadavis, @whoopigoldberg for being EPs, and lending your star power to the process.

For your courage and trust, thank you…

Major Thank you , @jefffriday and @iamnicolefriday for continuing to holding space for our stories for the past 30 years! I was in Miami with my cast & crew celebrating. We did it, y’all!! #winners. #twice. @slick_naim & Lane Zola Williamson took home BEST SCREENPLAY & the super talented @marsaimartin walked away with BEST PERFORMANCE. Being a casting director, one of the highest awards and honors is for your cast to be recognized, and much love to @datariturner, the pulse and the frame. BLESSINGS!

The rooms were electric, filled with storytellers; the conversations were real, and the love for Black cinema was loud. I couldn’t believe we had to turn away over 100 people at the Saturday screening!!!

Current Mood: Accepting flowers, positive energy and all the love! 🎬 😃 ❤️🌹🌞🕶️ #thecastingward

I had the honor of moderating a discussion at the American Black Film Festival about the independent film Girl Dad starring Courtney Vance and Marsai Martin. I sat down with Director/Writer Solvan “Slick” Naim and Producer Datari Turner about the film. They also gave advice to aspiring filmmakers. #abff30

Among the films that will have its World Premiere at the 30th American Black Film Festival (ABFF) is ‘Girl Dad,’ directed by Solvan Slick Naim and starring Marsai Martin and Courtney B. Vance.

The script was written by Naim and Lane Zola Williamson. The cast also includes Madison Bailey, Michael Rainey, Meagan Good, Sierra Capri, and Javon Walton. The festival will take place in Miami Beach from May 27–31, 2026.

The story centers on a tough, guarded queer 17-year-old from Brooklyn, who leaves Brooklyn for the first time to spend the summer with her estranged father, a struggling composer in Los Angeles. What starts as an awkward reunion turns into something deeper when a used refrigerator becomes the unexpected center of their conflict, forcing them to confront old wounds and rebuild what they’ve lost.

The producers are Jamie Foxx, Datari Turner, Phil Thornton, Marsai Martin, Josh Martin, and Solvan Slick Naim. The executive producing team include Aaron L. Gilbert, Trell Woodberry, Meagan Good, Alan Pao, Nicole Dow, Courtney B. Vance, Kevin and Kim Lewis.
