It has been an absolute pleasure working in El Grotto but it is time to say goodbye. I just want to thank the owners, management and colleagues past and present, that I can now call my family! It was more than just a bar job it was real hospitality and I loved every minute of it. We should be in Broome right now but a slight bump in the road has changed that but that’s a story for another day.

Last week we received the news that a great friend and mentor of ours passed away.

Gregorio Martínez (Don Goyo) was one of the greatest Mezcaleros of his generation, producing Mezcal for @nuestrasoledad.mezcal and @eljolgorio.mezcal that are now coveted all over the world and we’ve had the pleasure to work with over the years.

Don Goyo was an exceptional host who welcomed over 100 bartenders from Australia to his palenque, always with a smile and always happy to share stories and show us around his humble operation in San Baltazar, Oaxaca.

A few weeks ago, we had the honour of spending some time with him during this years Agave Tour and once again he showed us the true meaning of hospitality, allowing us to roam around his Palenque, help with the loading of his latest oven whilst he told stories pouring plenty of bottles or Mezcal for everyone to take home and allowing us to take this very special photo with him.

Don Goyo, thank you for all the memories and for sharing a part of your life and your craft with us all.🙏
