A little wander through our Midwest Sanctuary starting with this beautiful video by @daveburk 🌿

I love how the garden stays with you as you move through this home. Sometimes it opens into a full view; sometimes it’s just a glimpse through a doorway or the soft green of trees behind fluted glass. We designed the house around these connections, letting nature bring softness to the architecture.

For the new Success Academy Bronx K–12 Campus, SOM designed a 310,000-square-foot K–12 “school of the future,” with every aspect of the architecture supporting @successacademy’s groundbreaking schooling practice. The new campus in the South Bronx serves 2,400 scholars each year with the goal of educating some of New York City’s poorest children with the highest level of excellence in public education.

“The South Bronx campus shows what is possible when innovative design is harnessed to advance a bold educational mission,” said Partner Colin Koop (@colinkoop1). “The team was asked to design a ‘school of the future’ that would define a new model of K–12 educational excellence. This project delivers on that opportunity by reconsidering how architecture can support a culture of mentorship, community, arts, athletics, and college preparedness.”

To support a holistic education, the building offers a wide range of specialized environments: lecture halls, dance studios, a 300-seat auditorium, futsal court, gymnasium, and more. These spaces mirror collegiate and professional settings, encouraging scholars to explore beyond traditional classrooms—on stage, in studios, and on the court.

At the center of the design is the “scholar spine,” a multilevel corridor that runs the full length of the building. Part gallery, part collaboration hub, it features breakout alcoves, flexible workspaces, and writable surfaces that showcase student work and support interdisciplinary learning. As a shared space for all grade levels, the spine reinforces Success Academy’s culture of mentorship and community.

How do you build an entirely new mixed-use neighborhood above active railroad tracks where minimal buildable land exists?

In the latest episode of How Did They Build That? (Season 5, Episode 10), Principals Kim Van Holsbeke and Preetam Biswas explore the design and engineering challenges behind Manhattan West—one of the largest and most complex developments in New York City’s recent history. Decades in the making, the project transforms a previously underdeveloped district into an entirely new neighborhood built above railroad tracks where minimal buildable land existed. Navigating these challenges required an intricate synthesis of design and engineering and exemplifies what an integrated firm can accomplish.

There is no fixture visible anywhere on this stair. The light washes the wall behind the treads, following the curve all the way down.

You cannot order that. It gets drawn, coordinated, and built by people who care about getting it right.

Proud of the partners who made this one happen.

🏆 Atelier Ten is pleased to share that the Disney New York City Headquarters, Robert A. Iger Building was awarded a 2026 ASLANY Merit Award.

Sustainability was central to the project from the outset. As sustainability consultants, we were proud to contribute to this all-electric, LEED Platinum workplace, where high-performance building design and landscape work together to support a healthier, low-carbon future for New York City.

The landscape strategy transforms nearly an acre of rooftop space into a series of terraces, green roofs, and immersive planted environments that support both people and ecology. The outdoor spaces contribute to the project’s resilience strategy, capturing stormwater, supporting biodiversity, and connecting occupants with nature.

Congratulations to the entire team on this recognition.

Sany IROOTECH Headquarters | SOM @skidmoreowingsmerrill

In Guangzhou’s Pazhou district, SOM’s twin-tower headquarters project combines structural innovation with public urban space.

Instead of a conventional podium, the towers are lifted above the ground to create a landscaped public plaza connected to the city’s pedestrian network and nearby parks.

A five-storey diagrid structure of concrete-filled steel tubes wraps the towers, enabling column-free office spaces and panoramic views. Sky terraces inserted every five floors introduce greenery, natural ventilation, and outdoor workspaces throughout the building.

Designed for Guangzhou’s subtropical climate, the project integrates passive shading, operable façades, and elevated gardens, redefining the high-rise workplace as an open and connected urban environment. The project’s diagonal grid structure provides exceptional rigidity and strength for a building of this height.

SOM’s Sany iROOTECH Headquarters in Guangzhou is defined by two sculptural towers that appear to float above an open urban podium, blending advanced structural engineering with public-facing mixed-use space.

The project features a large-scale external diagrid structure that suspends five-story floor modules, creating highly flexible, column-free interiors adaptable for office, hotel, and residential use.

Designed for Guangzhou’s typhoon and seismic conditions, the towers incorporate SOM’s patented pin-fuse joint system, allowing the structure to flex and dissipate seismic energy during earthquakes while maintaining post-event occupancy.

The glass façade is integrated within the expressive steel diagrid, combining high-performance glazing with deep structural framing to reduce solar gain, maximize daylight, and emphasize the towers’ transparent, lightweight appearance.

Floor-to-ceiling curtain wall glazing enhances panoramic city views and reinforces the architectural concept of openness and vertical connectivity, while landscaped terraces extend the public realm upward through the development.

Nachnutzung mitgedacht.

It’s the cold hard truth: the Winter Olympics rarely lives up to the same degree of architectural spectacle that the public has come to expect from its summertime counterpart. This comes down to a matter of scale—about one-third as many athletes typically compete—and the outdoor nature of many sporting events on the calendar, where a dramatic snow-dressed slope or landscape suffices. Moreover, the energy infrastructure required to maintain ice rinks at the proper humidity and temperature comes with a hefty price tag that can easily eat into design budgets.

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, held February 6–22 and March 6–15 respectively, are no different. More than 2,900 athletes (compared to Paris 2024’s nearly 11,000) have flocked to Italy to vie for gold. There, Olympians and spectators alike will find little in the way of new construction, but planners have carefully considered the afterlife of the games. And, for the first time in history, two cities will jointly play the role of host in what is being billed as one of the most geographically diverse Olympics ever.

Let the Games begin! Our updated look at the Milano Cortina 2026 venues features new images of the Santa Giulia Arena, set to host ice hockey, and the Olympic Village, a major redevelopment that will convert to student housing after the Games. We speak with the teams behind both projects about how these designs were conceived for performance now — and for long-term use beyond 2026.
