I had a list of names. When I read them to your father, he recognized your name immediately. “Enzo,“ he said. “That’s the one.“ He was so confident, but I had my doubts. A few mornings later, I looked out our bedroom window at the big tree and saw the “e” in its branches.
It had been there all along.

It’s the same with the way I love you. I thought that when I had you, all this new love would rush in, unlike anything I’d ever felt. Instead I was overwhelmed with love I’d felt before, love I’d always had but that I’d hidden or pushed down because it was too intense. It had existed before you were born, before I met your father, before I’d ever fallen in love, before I knew what love was. It was always there, but now, holding you, it came to the surface, steady and unchanging. It wasn’t a tidal wave, it was a river, and it never stopped. It will never stop.

You are our golden boy. You smile like you know something no one else does. You love your toys- you’ll gaze at them before you even start playing. You love the taste of toothpaste. You love bathtime. You have tiny curls near your earlobes. You have one single eyelash on each eye that’s much longer than the others. You try to open-mouth kiss strangers. You despise bedtime because why would you want to waste a moment of your one wild and precious life sleeping? Still, once you get there, you laugh in your sleep.

You’re it, kid. Forever and ever. Happy 1.

Special thanks to @coleynext for making my birthday so special and for generally being a dreamy human being. And congrats to @aliciab215_ and @jared.bernstein.39 and LILLY on an amazing day!!
