One of the greatest HS wrestling coaches as well as collegiate wrestlers out of the state of Iowa is a man who competed at the HS level in Illinois named Brad Smith. Brad Smith was an Illinois HS State Champion at 126 in 1971 and State Champion at 132 in 1972 for Hersey HS in Arlington Heights, IL. He then went on to become an NCAA Champion for the Iowa Hawkeyes. After competing, he went into coaching. Brad coached for over 40 years at Iowa City HS and Lisbon HS and accumulated a resume that undeniably puts him in the conversation of potentially being the greatest HS wrestling coach of all time. In Brad Smith’s time coaching at Lisbon HS in the 80’s, IC High in the 90’s/00’s and then Lisbon again the past 10 or so years, Brad crowned 65 Individual State Champions, five 4X state champions (Scott Morningstar, Shane Light, Carter Happel, Cael Happel and Jeff McGinness), a state record 19 state team titles and racked up a state record 704 dual meet victories.. Brad is now the interim HC at Clear Creek Amana HS in Iowa! Anyways, Brad answered the question, “who is a wrestler you looked up to growing up” and of course his answer was pretty cool… BRAD SMITH: Dave Maple, Maine East High School, Illinois. Pretty sure he was a 2 time State Champion and remember watching him my sophomore year. He went on to wrestle at Oklahoma State. Pretty cool stuff! And for a guy who hold in as high of a regard as I personally hold Brad in, I figured I’d take things a step further by looking Dave Maple up! Turns out he was a phenom in Illinois, winning at least 1, maybe two state titles as well as the National HS Freestyle Championship at 136 pounds, Illinois Junior Olympic Championship in both the Greco-Roman and Freestyle categories, and also the Mexican National Championships in both the Greco-Roman and Freestyle categories! Collegiately, Dave Maple was an NCAA Qualifier for both Northern Illinois University and Oklahoma State! Good stuff as always, Brad! 🐐🔨
