Eight years since the release of her sophomore album “Sol-Angel and The Hadley Street Dreams”, @solangeknowles triumphantly returns with her third studio album, “A Seat at the Table.” 10 years ago, it was released on September 30, 2016 via Saint and @columbiarecords. Solange enlisted a variety of collaborators such as @liltunechi, @qtiptheabstract, @thekingdream, @bjthechicagokid, @kellyrowland, @tweet_, @questlove, @andre3000, @sampha, @kelela and many others. The album’s themes include rage, despair and empowerment. It includes musical elements of funk, neo soul, psychedelic soul and contemporary R&B. Throughout its 21-track run, “A Seat at the Table” is an album deeply rooted in various levels of black consciousness, “A Seat” reveals to the world the inner mechanisms of the singer’s mind. By making herself the subject of evaluation on most of the tracks, Solange offers up a deeply personal look into what it feels like being her, being black, and being a woman. In an interview with @npr, the sister of @beyonce reflected on the album’s naming process. “I’m inviting you to have a seat at my table,” she said. “And it’s an honor to be able to have a seat at our table and for us to open up in this way and for us to feel safe enough to have these conversations and share them with you.” In a series of interludes that includes @masterp, @mrmathewknowles and @mstinalawson, they reflect on their respective backgrounds, triumphs, black pride, and brushes with racism and resistance. Solange gives listeners a glimpse into the complex history that made her who she is today. The thumping basslines of “Cranes in the Sky” bare Solange’s past with abiding clarity. “Don’t Touch My Hair” is an ode to African-American hair textures, while “F.U.B.U.” attempts to obliterate black appropriation. An entire decade later, since its release, “A Seat at the Table” remains Solange’s most realized body of work as it clears the path for black self-exploration on all levels! #ASeatAtTheTable #SolangeKnowles #CranesInTheSky #DontTouchMyHair #FUBUForUsByUs 👸🏾✊🏾🖤🎶🎵

SOLANGE - A Seat at the Table
2016 Saint Records / @columbiarecords

10 years ago today, @solangeknowles reclaimed her seat at the table as a proud Black woman on her third studio album.
To help bring her vision to life, she invited a flawless cast of guest producers and performers, and earned the top spot on many prominent year-end lists, including by @pitchfork, @nprmusic, @spinmag, or @clashmagazine. Happy anniversary to this landmark album in contemporary soul and R&B!
