BEHIND THE RECORD — NO. 001

We spend a lot of time talking about what music is worth. This series is about why.

The songs, the producers, the unexpected second lives of recordings. The stories that don’t show up on a royalty statement.

We’re kicking things off with Chaka Khan’s Like Sugar and the remarkable role Switch played in bringing it to life.

At JAB Music, we’re active in the global market for music rights, from publishing and masters to producer and artists royalties.

Have a music catalog you’re considering selling? Let’s talk.

$Released on August 21, 2007, “Kala” is the second studio album from UK hip-hop artist M.I.A. (@miamatangi) 🛩️ Released on XL Recordings/Interscope Records (@xlrecordings @interscope), “Kala” was the follow-up to the 2005 album “Arular”. Born in Britain, the Sri Lankan M.I.A. brought a punk rock attitude to her distinct style of hip-hop. Having released the critically acclaimed “Arular” in 2005, M.I.A. initially planned to work with producer Timbaland (@timbaland) for her sophomore effort. Unable to obtain a long-term work visa to enter the United States, M.I.A. instead recorded her second studio album titled “Kala” in various countries around the world. Incorporating influences of South Asian music, “Kala” addresses political themes such as poverty, capitalism, and illegal immigration. Naming the album after her mother, “Kala” was critically acclaimed upon release. Including the Grammy-nominated single ‘Paper Planes’, “Kala” was eventually certified Gold. Production on the album was handled by Switch (@daveswitchtaylor), Diplo (@diplo), Blaqstarr (@blaqstarr), Timbaland, and M.I.A. herself, among others. Guest features include Timbaland, Wilcannia Mob, and Afrikan Boy (@afrikan.boy) 🛩️ In 2010, M.I.A. returned with her third studio album “/\/\ /\ Y /\”. Her most recent full-length project titled “M.I.7” was released in 2026.
