Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. — 1 Sam. 16:7

As a minority, I grew up in a neighborhood that was better known for gang violence than for producing anyone in this business.

It was either: gang affiliated, in jail or dead.

By the Grace of God, I was none of the above…

However, I’m fascinated by the art of tattoos and covered in them, and as a minority I’ve spent most of my life feeling like I was starting a few steps behind everyone else in the room full of people with heavy pedigrees.

And I thought those things were going to hold me back and to this day, my imposter syndrome tends to kicks in.

But what I’ve learned is that none of it actually matters nor determines where and how far you can go.

I don’t care how good you look on paper, the degrees you have or what Ivy League school you came from, one thing is for sure: you won’t outwork me.

That very thing has allowed me to be in rooms that I never thought I could be in.

Where you come from, your background, your ethnicity, the way you look — none of it is what people remember.

What they remember is the value you brought and the way you carried yourself while you did it.

That’s what builds a reputation. And in any business, your reputation is everything.

New ink to carry the reminder.
