Welcome to Guernica’s October 2026 issue!

This month, we consider how we come to know the world through the body, where memory, intuition, and the senses meet to make our encounters legible. Across fiction, nonfiction, letters, interviews, Global Spotlights, and poetry, these works move through childhood, hearing loss, war, exile, dance, and illness, asking what we understand only by being touched by it.

Across the issue, knowledge arrives through sensation: the roar of warplanes over Aleppo, a Kashmiri childhood recalled from an English hospital room, sounds a man fears he will lose, a dancer’s inherited discipline, the smell of hyacinth in the back of a car. What we know carries traces of everything that has touched us, and literature returns us to the fullness of that encounter.

Out of all the reasons to visit the Berkshires — a woodsy region of western Massachusetts that many New Yorkers escape to in the summer — I never really considered design to be one of them, unless we’re talking about MASS MoCA or modernist architecture, I suppose. So it’s honestly a little bit wild that something has popped up in the area like @walkerstreetmarket, a sprawling design showroom full of commissioned work from a roster of talents that could rival The Future Perfect’s.

Opened in mid-July inside a 3,000-sqft early-1900s former department store building, by fashion-designer-turned-interiors-guru Matthew Ames, the project is pretty much exactly how you might imagine a Berkshires version of The Future Perfect that’s lovingly attuned to its own context: lots of gallery-level studio crafts, with a contemporary edge, culled from nearly 70 of the best new talents who still work with their hands and venerate, as Ames does, the beauty of pieces that make that fact obvious.
