You know I love a good non fic and this has been on the list for a long time! Wonderfully written and elite journalism. The story of corruption on the Osage Reservation; yet another story of how Native Americans were brutalized and taken advantage of. A hard read but a must read.

We were delighted to welcome bestselling author and master storyteller @david_grann to Stepinac! Grann is the award-winning author of several acclaimed books, including The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder, and Killers of the Flower Moon, which was adapted into a film and nominated for 10 Academy Awards.

Each summer, our Crusaders take part in a schoolwide reading assignment, and this year’s selection was Grann’s The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder.

During his visit, Grann took our students behind the scenes of this incredible true story of survival, sharing how he approaches research like a real-life detective, uncovers forgotten histories, and follows the truth wherever it leads.

A little booze, a little cheese, and a friggin’ extraordinary amount of talent in one room.

Last night at the CUNY Graduate Center, Biographers International Organization honored Bill Thomas, Doubleday’s publisher and editor-in-chief, with its 2026 Editorial Excellence Award.

Joining him to talk book research were Scott Anderson (Lawrence in Arabia, King of Kings), David Grann (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Wager), Patrick Radden Keefe (Say Nothing, Empire of Pain, London Falling), and Hampton Sides (Ghost Soldiers, The Wide Wide Sea). Bill is their book editor. @david_grann @hamptonsidesauthor @praddenkeefe

The bench was, erm, deep.

Candice Millard (The River of Doubt, Destiny of the Republic) is also one of his authors. I heard she couldn’t make it. We’d have loved her there! @candicemillard

The audience included @kaibird2026 and @debbyapplegate , both Pulitzer Prize winners. Debby sat right behind me, and several times we were the only two laughing loudly. I love her writing, and we’re always on the same comedy wavelength.

A perfectly normal Tuesday evening in New York. 😄

I told Kai (!) I’d just bought the paperback of American Prometheus, the Oppenheimer biography he wrote with Martin J. Sherwin, for my flight to Germany. Required homework for anyone writing about Einstein.

His verdict made me laugh: “Oh, wow! - far too long a book for a plane.”

Maybe, but I’m bringing it anyway. I like a book on a plane and a movie on a real screen. I’m a film snob.

What I loved most was hearing how these writers research. You read their books and want to know how on earth they did it. A master class. I could have stayed another three hours.

Of course my hand shot up. Yes, I’ve written biographies myself. Being published has done absolutely nothing to cure me of questions.

A big shout-out to @lauren_arrington_author on her first event as BIO’s new president! I’m super excited for her upcoming book, Bohemians on the Breadline: The Radical Women Artists of Roosevelt’s New Deal. Right up my alley.

Lovely to see so many friends. We spend so much time alone doing this work. What a treat to spend an evening together.
