“Drag queens never forget the lyrics to songs they had to burn to a CD to perform!”: We celebrated the birthday of my dear friend Louis Mistretta today. We met in the early 2000s when we were both students in Rochester, New York. In those days of yore, the Rochester streets knew us as Sasha Sashay and Jenna Saisquoi, drag queens who would occasionally perform songs that might get us cancelled today. This afternoon, I gave him the option of picking a song from those bad old days and told him I would lipsync it as a birthday gift. He chose “Bottle Action,” by Miss B. Not only do I recall the lyrics, but the song still cracks me up. I’ve lost count of the number of times Sasha and I had to tell people: “I don’t fight, I don’t argue . . .” It’s great to now be men of a certain age, still great friends, and still able to remind folks as the grown men that we are, “don’t let these advanced degrees fool ya, baby. We don’t fight, we don’t argue . . .” Love you, sis! #birthday #drag #lipsync #bottle #love

I first visited San Francisco in 1987. That era is seared into my mind, but I think a lot of people have forgotten what San Francisco was like then. It was sort of a war zone. The Castro was just devastated. I saw so many men who were ghosts of themselves, marked with Kaposi syndrome. And even though we were told that HIV was not contagious by air, the whole city was afraid—in a way that was similar to the pandemic, but different because you could see people who were dying on the street. Testing positive in that era was a death sentence. @david_lauterstein’s memoir "Sodomy Gods"—one of the most arresting titles in history—brought that era back to me in so many ways. It covers the rage and the beauty that coexisted inside the devastation of the AIDS crisis and how David started the fashion brand Nasty Pig, which was not just a fashion brand, but an act of cultural resistance. To launch a sex-positive queer brand in 1994, in the middle of the AIDS crisis, when the dominant cultural narrative around gay sexuality was shame and death and moral condemnation, was such a radical act. This was pre “Will and Grace.” It was the era of “Don’t ask, don’t tell,” and Jerry Falwell calling AIDS "the wrath of God upon homosexuals." Listen to this @memoirnation interview. It’s inspiring, empowering, touching, loving, funny, and more. https://www.memoirnation.com/podcast

Guest David Lauterstein talks about art and writing and purpose. Lauterstein’s book couldn’t NOT catch our eye. Sodomy Gods is a provocative title, and the point of giving his memoir this title was to make a point, to push readers to think about unequal treatment, and to stand proud. Lauterstein’s company, Nasty Pig, similarly pokes at assumptions, biases, and shame so often attached to queer sexuality. He and his partner, Frederick Kearney, launched the sex-positive brand in 1994, at the height of the AIDS crisis, when celebrating gay identity was itself an act of resistance. In this conversation, we talk about writing through grief and defiance, building something bold out of love and loss, and what it costs to tell the truth about who you are, and what doing so makes possible. #memoir #community #podcast #newepisode #explorepage #podcastepisode #memoirauthor #writingcommunity #writing #writer #author #authorlife #authorsofinstagram
