Thank you to @fox46charlotte and reporter @david_schuman for sharing one Charlotte couple’s experience planning ahead with Earth Funeral.

After more than 50 years of marriage, Marsha and Michael Costigan chose soil transformation as Michael lives with primary progressive aphasia.

They had discussed cremation, but the decision never felt settled. Earth Funeral offered an option that felt more aligned with Michael’s lifelong care for the environment.

“It’s so good for the earth, and my husband is very ecologically involved,” Marsha shared.

She plans to use some of the resulting soil in her garden and donate the rest to conservation projects.

Human composting is already available to North Carolina families facing immediate or imminent needs.

✍️ @david_schuman : For nearly 30 years, the smells of fresh bread and pastries have drifted from Manolo’s bakery in East Charlotte, an institution. But its namesake, owner and Colombian-born U.S. citizen Manolo Betancur, says it’s struggling: “No immigrants are going to come to this bakery. And if I don’t have customers, I don’t have a business.” Betancur says his community has lived in fear since President Trump took office in January, “not wanting to get together or even leave home.” His bakery’s retail sales are down 20 percent from last year.
Now, several news outlets are reporting Border Patrol agents could be coming to the city Manolo loves: “It just made me sick, man, sick in my stomach. As an un-American citizen, I had to carry my passport because the way they look, the way they talk, and because my accent.”

In Chicago, protests and controversy have followed Border Patrol as its carried out operations the administration says are meant to reduce crime and illegal immigration. Betancur says he will be on a call Wednesday with Charlotte nonprofit groups and churches to talk about how to respond. Paola Garcia: “I know that our directors are going to gather and see if there are any measures that we need to take internally here on our campus to ensure that not only our staff are safe, but also our community is safe as well.” Becca O’Neill is an immigration lawyer and co-director of Carolina Migrant Network: “I try to do the best of my ability to make a plan for people to be there when and if they’re taken into immigration custody, but all I can tell people is that, you know, I’m sorry they’re in this position.”

The Department of Homeland Security wouldn’t confirm or deny plans to send agents to Charlotte, saying in a statement to Queen City News, every day DHS enforces the laws of the nation across the country.
We do not discuss future or potential operations. Paola Garcia: “Latinos are hard workers. We’re people of faith. We love this country. So I just want to challenge people out there that have this negative stereotype about this community that that’s not true at all.”

MORE BANK ENTERTAINMENT 🎼

Uptown Charlotte could have another live music venue.

The city says Tepper Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Panthers and Charlotte FC, plans to build a 4,400-seat indoor music venue adjacent to Bank of America Stadium, hosting 80 to 100 shows annually.

TSE has told city officials Monday that no public money will be used to build the venue.

The council will vote this month on moving forward with the next steps of the plan.

Since Tepper purchased the Panthers, he has emphasized bringing performances to BofA.

REMEMBERING THE 'PRINCE OF DARKNESS'

Ozzy Osbourne, a legend of rock and roll, died Tuesday at the age of 76.

Riki Rachtman, a former MTV host and rock radio personality, worked with him for decades. He says the Osbournes were responsible for some of the greatest honors of his career.

"When [Black] Sabbath did a big reunion and they hadn't played since the early '80s, Sharon [Osbourne] asked me to introduce them on stage," he said. "Those little things are like, 'Wow, that's kinda neat.' I'll always remember that."

'LIKE A TURTLE SWAM IN IT' 🐢🥤

The tap water in Kings Mountain has a distinctly earthy taste and smell, and residents want the problem fixed.

One woman said it tastes like “mud and mold.”

At Mountain View Restaurant, the staff has made a habit of warning every customer who sits down.

“It’s affected the tea,” said Kim Dulin, a server. “Some people tolerate it, and some people just don’t. We cook with it too, and people are kind of putting that together, and I think they’re afraid.”

The city declined QCN’s interview request but said in a statement that the water has “elevated levels of organic matter.”
