During the late 60s and early 70s, when Prog and Art-Rock were flexing their musical complications and singer-songwriters were embracing their inner complications, The Move was my go-to band when I needed audacious rock that had playful humor at its core. I don’t think they had one proper love song, but they could lay down some of the heaviest rock riffs to the silliest song ideas and it all made perfect sense to me. Besides Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne’s great melodies and inventive arrangements, part of The Move’s power came from Bev Bevan’s uniquely pugilistic drumming. The Move morphed into The Electric Light Orchestra in 1971 and then Roy Wood left to form Wizzard and have a solo career, leaving Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan to turn ELO into one of the 70’s and 80s hugest hit makers. Lynne would also become one of pop’s greatest producers, most notably producing albums by The Everly Brothers, Del Shannon, Dave Edmunds, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Joe Cocker, Paul McCartney as well as The Traveling Wilburys, with whom he was an equal band mate.

This edition of Air-Conditioned celebrates melodic Power-Pop/Rock with some great tracks courtesy of The Beatles, Dwight Twilley Band, Smithereens, Bangles, Tommy Keene, Adrian Belew, XTC, and The Wonders, who are fresh off the stage from Tom Hanks cinematic 60s pop music love letter, That Thing You Do. In addition to those groovy acts, we have The Beat, The Spongetones, Cotton Mather, Randy VanWarmer, Warren Pash, and Murray Attaway, who was the leader of the great 80s Georgia-based band Guadalcanal Diary. Kicking off this episode is The Move from their romping masterpiece Shazam. Oh Yeah!!!!! Fun! Fun!! Fun!!!!!!!!

For all Tribute Band hopefuls, musicians wanting to tag in, and people who like to mark calendars: now’s a great time to cancel that July vacation to Michigan because everyone’s third favorite tribute band night requests your presence.

Q: I have a band I want to do! How do I play this show?
A: DM us here (@byotributeband) or contact Dave (@davidblyons) or Dana (@danaswanswan) in the methods you know. Pitch your band!

Q: Do I need band members to pitch?
A: Not necessarily! There are people following this very account willing to jump in for the right project.

Q: Do I need to be good?
A: Nope! This is a low stakes show, but we encourage people of all levels. Just learned drums? Great. Played keyboards for twenty years? Great.

Q: I heard this was only 80’s bands…
A: While Nitro is a favorite, it’s not the requirement by a long shot. If it’s a good idea AND it hasn’t been done recently, please hit us up!

Q: What other requirements?
A: Would several people other than you enjoy it? Ask yourself this question many times. Poll some friends and exes. Poll five people you don’t know. Also, and we cannot stress this enough, NO BUSTERS. To quote Quincy Jones, “Check Your Egos at the Door.”

Q: Is there a theme to this show?
A: Themes tend to develop after bands are selected, but we don’t like to limit people.

Q: How much time do I have to submit an idea?
A: Until the night fills up! People occasionally drop out due to schedules, but we’ll have another show soon. Resubmit on the next one.

Q: Someone did the thing I wanted to do!!!
A: Wait a few years and resubmit, do something else, don’t guilt us in the DMs (it’s weird?)
