fini! “Monkey on my Back, an homage to Bouguereau” 18x24” oil on canvas. When is it done? Never, or at least when the person you take lessons from says it is….started as just a study 2 years ago on a very bad canvas it turned a corner at some point and wanted to be more than just a study…so many people to thank for their help ; @gabrielagonzalezdellosso for her expert mentorship on approach, @davidgrayart for his helping me at the beginning and @damonlehrer for the finish! And if it wasn’t for @juliebcreative and her Color Bootcamp workshop my color choices would’ve been infinitely harder! Thanx all, you rock!

After months of research, “my” new paints have arrived. I say mine but I am excited to be the new supplier of M.Graham walnut oil paints here in Nova Scotia.

I attended a one week Portrait Painting Masterclass at @michel.nadai which was taught by an absolute master portrait painter @davidgrayart Along with it being a memorable week where I met so many lively artists from France and around the world, I was also introduced to @m.grahamco paints. The display will be out next week in the gallery space and my workshop students will most certainly be using “Transparent Red Oxide” for my Intermediate Portrait Painting Workshop later this month!

Can’t wait to open the tubes later today!

I’m excited to announce my arrival at Villa Karo, Grand-Popo, Benin Republic 🇧🇯

This residency offers a dedicated period for research, experimentation, and new artistic development. I look forward to engaging with the cultural and coastal environment here and allowing it to inform my ongoing practice.

Thank you to the team at @villakaro.benin for this opportunity.

My sketchnote from the next workshop at the #worldsketchnoteweek (@sketchnoteschool), this time by @davidgrayart. My favourite take from this workshop - "Drawing IS thinking on paper", well phrased!

And overall nice tipps on using the mixed perspective, zooming out in order to concentrate on the bigger shape rather than the details when faces with a visually complex element.

Was fun!

Art doesn’t just show the world as it is — it speaks to what we feel but cannot put into words. 🎨✨

Every brushstroke is a story, every canvas a mirror. When we share our art, we’re giving others a piece of themselves they didn’t even know they were missing. 💡💙

Van Gogh said it best:

“Normality is a paved road — it’s comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow.” 🌻

🎨 Do you think comfort ever made great art?

Yep, it happened again… 😏

Tell us you’re an artist… without telling us you’re an artist. 😉🎨☕

Painting the Head from Life

David Gray

May 12 - 16

In this workshop, David will take you through his classically inspired approach to painting the head/portrait. All four stages of his four-step process will be covered, including underdrawing, underpainting, overpainting, and glazing. You will receive demonstrations, detailed explanations, critiques, and hands-on support. David’s intention as an instructor is to fill your artistic tool belt and help you better tackle the difficulties of this challenging subject. All levels are welcome, though the raw beginner might do better not to take this as a first class.
