Today we’re listening to the ridiculously impressive 6th record “Becoming” by local pop sensation David Hale. At this point in his young yet seasoned career, David Hale shows no fear in being ambitious in both form and sound. His most recent two albums felt like true mastery of studio magic full of audaciously lush and hi-fi production but this new record has an even more polished, radio-ready feel that is relentless in its excellence all the way through the tracklist. “Becoming” takes on a new level of professionalism that only furthers David’s perfectionist approach to music that he excels in. The flow of the album stands out especially when so many hits are crammed into under 50 minutes. Something he makes sure of is that he dips his toes into many different pools within the record — a quick excursion through 60’s psychedelia or a detour into ethereal chillwave.

Its all hooks galore here, a true pop record through and through, rejoicing in its ability to stick a catchy melody so deep into your ears that it becomes a task to get it unstuck — like on the contagious energy of “Unreachable”, the stylishly nostalgic hook on “This Ain’t Home” or the rhythmic swagger of “Tell Me Whatchu Know feat. deCasa”. David Hale keeps his deep affection for 80’s pop sensibility but shares this love with a sonic progressivism that dares to imagine futuristic soundscapes to form some type of mutant pop sound that is both parts future and past. Towards the end of the album, David’s lyrics turn toward something more ponderous and mature, this turn marking a new chapter in his future discography — a future where pop music nourishes not just our headspace but our hearts too.

💙💚 ⬇️ TOP 15 ALBUQUERQUE/NM ALBUMS OF 2025 ⬇️ 💚💙

1. Contact // Things Falls Apart
- A tormented rock and roll masterwork with stunning dynamics, epically constructed rock songs and vividly imagined poetry — not an exaggeration to say this is a top 10 rock record that came out on planet earth in 2025.
2. Sweet Roll // sweet roll
- The vibiest band in town finally releases their debut record that intoxicates in its celebration of truly euphoric music propelled by a contagious groove that defines the Albuquerque indie scene.
3. David Hale // Off The Record
- Without a doubt the most immaculately produced and mixed local record of the year, David Hale makes a huge name for himself with studio magic and crafting golden era 80’s inspired songs that lean hard into hi-fi psychedelia and feel ripe for the world stage.
4. Hataalii // I’LL BE AROUND
- Although he’s now a New York City resident, Hataalii dropped this gorgeous record while still residing in New Mexico and it’s one that evokes the starry nights and gorgeous purple and blue post-sunset hues of the southwest — a wholly honest songwriter’s record that basks in its timeless melodies and carefully arranged emotional landscapes.
5. Train Conductor & REIGHNBEAU // Who is this?
- The trippiest ABQ record of the year ends up being one of the most fascinating and complex too — the duo’s shape-shifting, liquid collaboration yields a vast space in time that revels in psychedelic ambience and neural ambition.
6. Dazeyrot // SKULLJUICE
- Just a hell of a mean and lean, pink and black, overpowered hardcore/punk/indie rock hybrid beast EP, setting the bar high as hell for the local scene.
7. s.t.a.c. // It’s Not You Anymore
- Perhaps the most contemplative local record of the year, s.t.a.c’s nearly all bass album has a therapeutic effect as its calming ripples move emotion across us like a river’s current.
8. Strange Magic // Effervescent
- Nothing too fancy, just 10 of the most memorably written and touching pop and indie rock songs you’ll hear in the 505 this year, their gorgeous melodic and lyrical content staying tucked right into my heart.

With Stranger Things 5 out, figured we’d throw back to when we filmed the music video in the location that they used for Joyce’s house in Stranger Things 4!
