You may have noticed that the chlorophyll is receding from the trees and plants right now. What’s happening is Persephone is returning to her role as queen of Hades in the underworld, where she presides for half of the year. This saddens her mother, Demeter, goddess of the earth, prosperity and fertility, leading her to withhold her gifts and producing fall and winter. Happily Persephone is allowed to return in the spring, inspiring her mother to bring back the fertile seasons. I just ran across photos of a show I had in an antiquities gallery in Manhattan. “The dogs on the furniture are very indicative of what this house is like. Whilst it’s filled with lots of wonderful things, there’s a real sense of homeyness. These interiors tell a story. For me, it’s striking to go into any of these rooms and realize that there’s almost nothing I don’t recognize as not having been a part of my childhood,” Flora Soames, noted British interior and fabrics designer, says about her family home she grew up in.

“The story of this house is about a team coming together and taking raw materials of the land and creating something beautiful, durable, and well appointed,” says interior designer Shannon Bowers

The kitchen features reclaimed terracotta tiles custom-painted with motifs personal to the homeowners and native to the land, and opens to a great room furnished with a 19th-century oval table topped with a large antique tankard filled with gathered wild flowers from the property

As we continue to reflect on our Bluffview project, featured in the Fall 2021 issue of @MilieuMag, the kitchen remains a favorite expression of the home.

An exuberant wicker pendant floats like a willowy sculpture above the marble-topped island, while steel French doors allow natural light to flood the adjoining seating area.

“It was important and intentional that the interiors feel traditional, but also fresh, even whimsical,” Shannon shared with @davidmasello of MILIEU. “Every room needs to be comfortable, inviting, approachable, and layered.”
