David OReilly

2008 marked the first year that short talks entered into a conversation with artists. None other than David OReilly, who was represented in the short film program at the time with his short film “RGB XYZ”, gave one of the first short talks interviews. Many years after winning the golden bear in 2009 with “Please Say Something", he sat down in front of our camera again.

Congratulations David OReilly on the inclusion of “Everything” in “Under the Same Sky?” at Le Cube Garges in Garges-lès-Gonesse.

The exhibition “Under the Same Sky?” is the second opus of the 2024-2025 season dedicated to the cosmos. The first exhibition, “Behind the Stars”, focused on images of space exploration. It revealed their political and military, extractivist, but also scientific and artistic underpinnings, while proposing other ways of empathizing with space, through sound or smell; a sketch of our cosmogony.

This second exhibition approaches the notion of cosmos as an organization, through an exploration of independent and artistic video games. In particular, it is the ability of the game to “make a world” that will be developed in the exhibition: an artistic medium and a tool for transcribing highly precise imaginaries, the game allows us to formulate radical hypotheses for society and the renewal of its myths.

📅 From February 13 to July 26, 2025

💌: Sharing our deepest condolences for the loss and damages incurred due to the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake in Japan. Our hearts go out to all those affected. Special thanks to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa @21_kanazawa , for preparing the exhibition “Digital Transformation Planet” and including David OReilly’s work “Eye of the Dream” in this fantastic show. 🙏

Check out David OReilly’s (@davidoreilly) latest feature on GEMINI Laboratory!

“GL: Artificial life is a theme that has long been pursued by mathematicians and engineers, such as Game of Life. However, I have the impression that the approach of Artificial Life is different from the research of such predecessors.

OReilly: That’s right. In my work, artificial life is viewed from the viewpoint of animation as technology.

The medium of animation has always been involved with technology. As I show in this work, there is a great aesthetic quality to the simulation of life. This short video is a small experiment for me. I made it to show the possibilities of how artificial life can relate to animation.

The word “animation” is derived from the word “animate,” which means to move or give life to something. In this sense, the question of the difference between real life and artificial life, and the boundary between the two, presented in this work, resonates with the question at the root of animation.”

Now that DXP and DXP2 have wrapped up, my heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who joined us from last October to March’s end. I'm forever grateful to @yukohasegawa1 , our dedicated curators, and the incredibly talented artists who made the exhibition a success. The interdisciplinary encounter, bridging new technologies and art, was truly inspiring. Meeting experts from various fields, including designers, researchers, and architects, was also a highlight. My work, "Pixelated Perceptions," is set to be exhibited @akbanksanat in Turkey next, and I'll be embarking on a European tour soon. Stay tuned for more exciting updates!
