Working Waters / Towards a Common Waters Policy with Dr Megan Clinch.

As the conversations continued and research evolved, the issues and tensions participants raised were visualised and embodied in a series of miniature scenes made by @davidrileymodelmaking Small enough to hold in the palm of a hand, they sat on a catchment base that showed the river and navigation. The work entitled ‘Working Waters’ was designed with a war room strategic operations model in mind. At its most static ‘Working Waters’ enabled people to take in the wide-ranging concerns people had around water, flooding and governance and share them with one another. However, when gatherings around the model were structured through a series of role play scenarios, it truly came to life. It offered people the opportunity to not only understand the complex picture, but also, create a world through which future actions could be imagined and debated.

The pictures above show just a few of the many miniatures made and inc stories and concerns around upland peat erosion, grouse shooting linked to the burning of the moors, ageing pipe infrastructure, pesticide run off from farm land, building new houses on flood planes, domestic use and detachment from the source, channelization and culverting rivers amongst others.

You can read more about the research and what we found by visiting the link in to bio above.

For the last five years I've been working alongside Anthropologist Dr Megan Clinch from Queen Mary University of London exploring governance, connection, care and stewardship of our water systems.

At the heart of the work which later became titled ‘Working Waters’ and its follow up ‘Towards a Common Waters Policy’ sat a series of conversations aimed at understanding why flooding happened in the Calder and its Catchment, and who was responsible. In doing so it revealed what the inhabitants of the Calder Catchment can teach us about how to encounter the climate crisis locally, in order to contribute to a more positive global climate future. Over the next month or so I will post details of the work and those who helped make it happen.

Sometimes a drawing isn’t enough. Sometimes a visual isn’t enough. This development is so good we’ve had a model built to help you fully appreciate what’s going on. This has to be the most special development in the North right now. Coming soon!

I spent the day at the office today revealing the amazing model by @davidrileymodelmaking of the project I am working on for @skyhouseco in Oughtibridge, Sheffield.

So super impressed with how detailed and well done this model is. 👌⭐

Also super excited as the scheme goes in site in January 2021 and this will be a reality...
