Industrial design for Yamaha Music: the PSR-E483 and PSR-E583 keyboard series.

Designing electronic musical instruments means understanding the specific needs of musicians, where intuitive interaction and quick access to functions are essential.

A key focus of our work was the interface design, with carefully considered layouts, clear groupings of controls, and a strong visual hierarchy.

One significant update from the previous generation was the integration of a new display with a black background and white graphics, creating a cleaner and more cohesive interface.

Last month, we traveled to China, where we had the honor of being invited as one of the German design studios to participate in the Hebei International Industrial Design Week (HIDW).

We had a great time showcasing our work, meeting new people, exchanging ideas, and connecting with interesting industry partners for future projects.

One of the highlights was seeing so much interest in our Bass Frog synthesizer, especially from students and younger visitors.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth and made this such a memorable experience!

One of three C25 prototypes we created in collaboration with our client @nonlinearlabs .

The main enclosure was fabricated from bent sheet metal to ensure stability and durability, while all plastic components were 3D printed to evaluate ergonomics, fit, and mechanical functionality. These prototypes allowed us to quickly test, refine, and validate key aspects of the instrument before moving forward.

We’re pretty happy with how it turned out, but we’re already working on the next iteration, refining the design further and improving its manufacturability. Stay tuned.

A look behind the scenes of the C25 Performance Synthesizer development at the lovely workshop of our client @nonlinearlabs in Berlin-Charlottenburg.

Projects like this thrive on close collaboration. Working side by side with the engineers at Nonlinear Labs allows industrial design and engineering to evolve together from day one. Ideas are tested, refined and improved directly on the workbench, making the development process both highly efficient and genuinely enjoyable.
