from @r_christian__’s foreword of @thee_annatomy’s FORCE! an opera in three acts:

“FORCE! is an opera, but an opera can be many things. This one tells the story of three Black femme characters and their counterparts incarcerated within the prison system. The entire story unfolds within the liminal space of the waiting room—over time, it reveals the interiority of each character, as well as their shared fantasies for a world beyond the one they presently occupy, one that exists beyond walls or borders. At its core, the opera centers on this act of collective dreaming.”

The publication comes with @thee_annatomy’s libretto, a live recording of the opera, and artistic interventions by @itspochop @suchi_k_b @davidthomson.nyc and @maria__gaspar

$coming soon! laboring over @thee_annatomy’s “FORCE! an opera in three acts” in all the best possible ways. Simply defined as a “big work,” an opera is a song cycle capacious enough to contain multitudes. Anna Martine Whitehead’s FORCE! an opera in three acts is a big work of strange sisterhoods, featuring fractaline characters with the power to disintegrate walls. A meditation on often-overlooked spaces—prison waiting rooms—FORCE! travels through silence, sound, and rhythm to dissipate borders between performers and audience members. This accompanying libretto, written by Whitehead, features the script of the performance interwoven with extensive footnotes, forming a complex constellation of black study, making, and being. The publication brings together a live recording of the opera, and features a foreword by @r_christian__, contributions by @suchi_k_b, @itspochop, @maria__gaspar, and @davidthomson.nyc, with essays and artistic interventions made alongside the “emergent opera.” Using the prison as a particular prism through which we can bear witness to the ways carceral systems replicate themselves, FORCE!, its notes, and the attendant collection of responses mark an attempt to abolish the Prison Industrial Complex in our heads, hearts, and houses. preorders now open thru smingsming.com or pick one up at the NYABF. ✨available in print & digital formats Clear ziplock bag containing a metal prong-bound book, along with various inserts, and flourescent green cassette tape.$
