40 years ago tonight I dropped the needle on my first record as a club DJ at Circus Circus on Mack in Detroit across from Grosse Pte. I want to say it was Art of Noise Beat Box 12" which is on this playlist. I was working at Todd's with Charles as light op, and my sister Natalie got me the gig. She was a waitress at Circus Circus along with our friend Gayle, and they played my post punk mix-tapes on top 40 nights from 8-9 before the dj started. The manager asked her to have me come in on a night it was closed, Tuesday. I was very reluctant. May 21st 1985 my friends Ross and Mark and Laura hooked me up with liquid courage in the way of something grose and pink with bubbles. I can name names of the crowd my first night - Dave Martinico, DaveBosch, Jimmy Doom, Terry, Bryan, Tom, Michael, Gayle, Ross, Mark, Chris manager. It had funhouse like props throughout (?) and the lights were like 6 that rotated lol (?) I remember doing slamming drinks of bubbley shit at the bar with Aimee to start every Tuesday. In 3 weeks it was standing room only, and by mid August the cops shut it down, which has made me very proud to this day. They did not like the club overflow out on the berm on Mack filled with punk-rockers who couldn't get in or just hung cuz it was nice out. I do remember a night when Dave and I had to protect ourselves from being attacked with some of his kitchen utensils which were in his car (mid move?) MAINLY a potato fork. But we made it! Oddly enough I have zero photos from that gig!!!!!! It really has been a wild ride since then. Definitely credit DJ Charles English & DJ Dianna and a little WLBS for the inspiration. I am very grateful to have experienced all this great music along the way, and to STILL be able to have THE BEST bands and music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
