Visiting Artist Davin Ebanks is in the Hot Shop this weekend, September 1-3! Ebanks is a Caribbean-American sculptor who primarily utilizes glass to explore his personal and cultural history and examine the relationship between identity and environment. Ebanks uses patterns and everyday elements from his island culture - bananas, woven baskets, ocean water - and, by translating them into glass, elevates them from the mundane to the aesthetic. The objects are transformed, forcing them to oscillate between the familiar and the foreign. During his residency, Ebanks will explore a new series focused on self-portraits animated by unique patterns and images. Visit us in the Hot Shop or watch along on the Daily Livestream (link in bio). GEEX is happy to welcome Susie Silbert (@susiesilbert) and Carmichael Jones (@captcarmikes) to our Board of Directors! 🤝 As a small nonprofit organization, GEEX relies on volunteer work to make our programs possible. The board consists of thoughtful and community-minded people who deeply care about GEEX’s mission, financial stability, and overall strategic direction. 💕 GEEX believes in the power of storytelling: to shift perspectives, to connect people, and to rethink possible futures. GEEX is led by BIPOC and queer values, experiences, and outlooks. Through community-building and representation, GEEX hopes to create a more inclusive, diverse, and accessible pathway into contemporary glass practice. 🌐 Carmichael and Susie join Helen Lee, Kim Harty, Anjali Srinivasan, Davin Ebanks, and Bre'Annah Stampley. Carmichael is the creative co-director of the Whole Shebang and a former fellow at the Creative Glass Center of America. Susie is a curator, speaker, author and believer in artists. The GEEX team is so grateful for their insight and counsel! ➜ Want to learn more about GEEX? On Thursday night we honoured the 57 participating artists of the 3rd Cayman Islands Biennial at a special awards ceremony hosted at the @natgalcayman . Sincere congratulations to this year's awardees: Bendel Hydes Award recipient Kaitlyn Elphinstone and Emerging Artist Award recipient Alyssa Janae Gilbert, as well as to those artists receiving special commendations: Babbity Barwick, Rochelle Miller, and Kerri-Anne Chisholm and Latoya Francis. Our Biennial Jury of Lisa Howie, Davin Ebanks and Leonard Dilbert had the challenging task of making the award selections and rose to the challenge through many days of careful deliberations. Thank you Leonard, Lisa and Davin, and thank you Davin and Lisa for joining me on the initial selection round. As Davin mentioned on the night there isn't a single 'place holder' work in this exhibition and it illustrates the deep commitment and skill of all of those featured. Congratulations to each of them and thank you for entrusting us with your work. Finally, thank you to @mysch_cayman and Minister Bush for presenting our awards, and to our sponsors, Butterfield Cayman, for your ongoing and generous support of the biennial and the gallery's work. #caymanartist #caymanart #natgalcayman #caymanislands #caribbeanart #caymanculture #caymanartweek

I’ve been on some of the best teams in all different spaces: on the shop floor, in the classroom, in the design studio, at the board room table, on both coasts and now in the damn middle … let me tell you something: I fucking LOVE working with the @geexglass team and for my 45th birthday I’m raising funds to be able to continue supporting the core team of @emilymleach and @bexoro. If I knew how to mobilize all of GEEX’s IG followers to contribute $45, I would have our operating budget for the whole year. Shy of that, consider this an invitation to support in some way. Maybe you’re a regular donor. Maybe it’s been a while. Maybe you’ve never supported. Maybe you’ve been too shy to signal boost. Here’s a friendly invitation to support in whichever way and at whatever scale you can! I was recently in a room where I was asked to evidence a recent success. While everyone else in the room cited some form of external validation, what came to me to share—what brought me the most pride was the sheer incredulity of bringing a new idea into actual existence. GEEX exists because of community support, an incredible core team, and a whole bunch of awesome collaborators down to make new and different spaces for urgent discussions in material learning. These slides are a quick rundown of the core team and the facilitators who ran the programs @geexglass produced in addition to GEEX Talks this past year. In 2022-2023, we ran: • 2 recorded and archived Flame Affinity discussions facilitated by @amylemairestudio and @madhotglass • 30 1:1 writing consultations with @anamatease and @lydboss • 3 BIPOC Co-learner Affinity Group meetings facilitated by @wildbreee and @adayamonthayear • 2 Book Club discussions led by guest facilitators @kimharty and @davin.ebanks alongside standing facilitators @suzannepeck and @a_mooers • and a special shout out to our previous year collaborators @workinuse @wuch and @taminglightning @glass.percy for their movement course and plasma podcast collab with @bexoro. Collaborators: It is no hyperbole to say you make this dream come true. Thank you for dreaming with us!!
