Congratulations to rhyme connoisseur @davina.bell and colour magician @lovlieillustration on the release of It’s a Fire Station Celebration! @hardiegrantkids

I may have given young Fergus a run for his money with all my questions. Davina, thank you for patiently answering all my writing and rhyming questions, and always having a good story or two to tell.

We recently got a call about a fire at our neighbour’s place. Thankfully the firies arrived quick smart and everyone, cats included, were safely outside. It also made me realise I had no idea where we kept our fire blanket or extinguisher. Know these things, friends!

And then there’s the forgotten lunches in the work air fryer, with us frantically opening windows and fanning out smoke before we cop another tell-off from maintenance. This book is the fire manual I’ve been needing.

A big thank you to our wonderful fire fighters for all they do.

And to all the curious little readers out there, keep asking questions.

A year to treasure, us together is out now! 🎉😊 How an amazing experience working with @davina.bell and @hachettekidsanz on this beautiful book full of colours and moments to treasure. I worked on it when I was pregnant with Julia and finished it just 2 weeks before welcoming her to the world. This book is very special and I hope you all love it! 🩷

Thanks to Naomi from @gildlings for being an amazing agent and Jeanmarie and Jacquie for being so lovely and helpful throughout the whole project 🥹

✨ The Little Bookroom is delighted to announce our new PANEL SERIES ✨

Taking place in November, we have two panels that are aimed at teachers and parents after hours to help promote childhood literacy and the importance of reading from an early age.

PANEL: Picture Book Creators and their Process

📅 THURSDAY 5th November, 6pm 📅

Join the Little Bookroom for an evening focused on the art of picture books, their creators and creation process. Lead by specialist picture book publisher, Miriam Rosenbloom of Scribble Books (@scribblekidsbooks), and featuring special guests Alison Lester (@alisonlesterbooks) and Zeno Sworder (@zenosworder). The evening will delve into the creation of picture books from first idea to final publication, and explore the artistry and process behind each step of the way.

PANEL: Books, Babies & Beyond - Reading to (and with) your kids

📅 THURSDAY 19th November, 6pm 📅

We all know the importance of reading to younger readers but when can we begin this practice?

Leanne Grogan and Davina Bell (@davina.bell) will join Sarah Mayor Cox (@bespokeshespoke) in conversation about practical and doable ways to grow your young readers from babies through to young adults. If you are a new parent, a parent of older readers, teacher or caregiver of older readers this is an evening you don’t want to miss.

Tickets are $25 (plus booking fee) for each panel event, which will include a $25 store credit to spend at the event.

Find out more information and book, via our events page: littlebookroom.com.au/events

As a part of the ABA Bookseller Events Program; this panel series has been assisted by the Australian Government through Writing Australia.

🥹 These kids!

This week at Story Explorers...we took a break from seasonal goodness and had a much-needed mid-term confidence boost ❤️

I love this book by Davina Bell and Allison Colpoys, I think every classroom and home should have it. It's a gentle rhyme and reminder that being smart isn't just about spellings and tests and getting everything right. Being smart is also creativity, being a kind friend and taking time to stop and see the world around you. We all agreed that we could do those things and that we ALL were smart in our own ways, our best ways.

I loved sitting in circle with them and sharing these beautiful affirmation cards by @isabelle_slimm_illustration (I don't think they're available now, sorry!) before creating our own and committing them to bag charms.

After the gorgeous slow summer we had, this term has felt exciting but overwhelming and I am lucky but also slightly terrified with the amount of work I have. It felt great to share this with the children and let them know that we all have wobbles and that's ok. We are smart, we can do this and we can have a lot of fun while we try our best ❤️

Here’s one simple step, that is often overlooked (or not yet known!), that can transform your library visits into more enjoyable and magical experiences.

Popping a bunch of books from authors you know and love on hold, so that they’re there and ready to go when you arrive, means you can enjoy the library experience that little bit more. Slow down, search for some other gems, have a read together and let your littles add whatever they’ve found to your borrowing pile.

Let’s be real, trying to remember the authors you love in an attempt to find good quality books during your visit AND keeping an eye on your littles, is A LOT.

So trust me on this one! It’s a game changer! ✨

Happy World Teacher's Day! 📚

Did you know that I am a former teacher?

I spent 10 years teaching in primary schools and 2 years in an Autism specialist school, and guided reading was always my favourite part of the day. Small groups, good books, little conversations and those moments when a child suddenly gets it.

I loved guided reading so much that it even became the focus of my MA dissertation.

'All the ways to be smart' by Davina Bell @davina.bell is one of my favorite books to read to children. Her writing is so imaginative and the illustrations are stunning. And of course the message is beautiful - being smart looks different on everyone and comes in many different ways.

Here's a massive thank you to all the teachers, TAs and SEND educators making time in their busy days for stories, curiosity and every child’s way of learning.

From one book lover to another — thank you for all that you do.

Happy World Teachers’ Day 🤍
