Not So Serious Radio celebrates 10 years of programming this month💥

On 19 January 2016, I hosted my first official show as DJ Roob on NSSR. Inspired by KEXP in Seattle, I really didn’t have a master plan for programming, but I absolutely loved (and still do) sharing music with an audience, particularly from independent and/or unsigned artists from around the globe.

Soon after, NSSR programming evolved to heavily emphasize artists from the San Diego music scene. Still thinking of KEXP, I asked station manager Zeb Navarro if we could host local bands live on the air. And he made it happen!

A group of dedicated of radio students volunteered on Wednesday nights from 2017-2020 to host local bands in the KKSM performance space. We didn’t have a budget or a lot of equipment for these in-studio performances, but we were scrappy and loved what we were doing.

Shout out to the NSSR crew — Kory, Davina, Kristina, Lydia, William, Nancy and Jake and others along the way. I’m still in awe of what we accomplished!

We provided a platform for nearly 70 local bands, until it all came crashing down with the pandemic in March 2020 when these live sessions were discontinued.

NSSR, however, still continues on KKSM to this day. And the @pacificviewsessions in Encinitas that I started hosting in 2025 continue to provide a platform for local musicians.

Thanks for listening,
Roob✌️

Next month, Not So Serious Radio hits the 10 year mark and I’ve been combing through the archives and feeling nostalgic.

Here’s a clip from The Swedish Models in-studio session @kksmradio in February 2020, just a few weeks before COVID shut us down for good.

Incredibly fun part of my life. Indebted to the volunteer crew who showed up week after week to produce nearly 80 sessions by local artists.

We were quite scrappy, and had major support from Station Manager Zeb Navarro. The sessions, which launched in 2017, became wildly popular and there were at least 10 more scheduled when the pandemic changed everything.

And 5 years later, these performances re-emerged as the @pacificviewsessions at a new location (PV Arts Center in Encinitas) with a new crew. Hosted 30+ sessions in our inaugural year and ready for 2026!
