Is California’s “Big One” overdue?

Not exactly, says UC Davis geologist Michael Oskin.

At a recent Davis Science Café, Oskin unpacked what scientists know about California’s major earthquakes — from why another “Big One” is inevitable to why it could actually be smaller than other historic earthquakes.

He also explained why where an earthquake happens matters, what the San Andreas Fault can tell us about future earthquakes, and why scientists still can’t predict exactly when one will strike.

Are humans the Earth’s greatest evolutionary force?

At a recent Davis Science Café, Andrew Whitehead explored how human activity is reshaping ecosystems — and, in turn, influencing evolution across species.

From pollution-resistant fish to species pushed toward extinction, the research highlights the profound and complex ways we are shaping life on Earth.

Think of your cells like a nightclub.

There’s a “bouncer” protein (called MDR1) that kicks out harmful chemicals to keep things running smoothly.

But some pollutants — like DDT — don’t just sneak in…they distract the bouncer and hold the door open for other toxins.

That means more harmful substances can build up in the body — and even affect how we process medications.

Can you die from a broken heart?

It turns out emotional stress can trigger a real heart condition called broken heart syndrome -- or takotsubo cardiomyopathy -- that closely mimics a heart attack, and affects women far more often than men.

During February’s Davis Science Cafe, UC Davis pharmacologist Crystal Ripplinger explained how her lab is studying how male and female hearts respond differently to stress, shedding light on a long history of underrepresentation of female models in cardiovascular research.

Ever feel like mosquitoes always pick you?

At last week's Davis Science Cafe, UC Davis neurobiologist Lisa Baik explained how taste, skin chemistry, and environmental cues influence mosquito behavior — and how new research could lead to safer, more effective repellents.

At the latest Davis Science Café, UC Davis professor Fushing Hsieh shared how statistical analysis and creativity collide! From recovering van Gogh’s original vibrant colors to studying social hierarchies in primates, Hsieh’s work proves that data analysis is more art than science.

“Data analysis is a creative task, not just fitting models one after another,” he said, urging the community to think critically about data in an AI-driven world.

Be sure to check out February's Science Cafe next Wednesday!

"Seagrass meadows are vital ecosystems. Not only do they help filter pollutants and provide a barrier for erosion but they are also habitats for juvenile fish and shellfish. Alarmingly, it’s estimated that about 90% of California’s seagrass beds have disappeared since the industrialization of California."

In this recent piece for Letters and Science Magazine, Greg Watry recaps Tessa M. Hill's recent Davis Science Café presentation on her and her colleagues' work (alongside Hog Island Oyster Co.) exploring the role seagrass meadows play in addressing ocean acidification.

AT EVERY DEPTH co-author Tessa M. Hill stopped by G Street Wunderbar in Davis earlier this week to talk about the climate, carbon, coasts, and a bit about the book too, as part of the Davis Science Cafe series, organized by Prof Jared Shaw.

Thanks to all who stopped by!
