Life Of A Don
15
Dear Adams State,
Thank you to the program that changed my life. When I walked onto this campus three years ago, I was a broken individual. I didn’t know anything about Adams State except that it was a small school in the middle of nowhere with a fast group of guys who could help push me to be better. When I got here, I found a lot more than that, I found life. I was initially shocked by just how small the school was, even smaller than the Juco I had transferred from. But it didn’t take long to discover how special this place truly was.

I remember walking into Coach Martin’s office for the first time, the walls completely lined with rows of massive National Championship trophies, 61 and counting. I was pretty sure he didn’t know who I was other than that I was a walk-on who had reached out to Coach Duncan. From the moment he spoke, I was captivated. His words carried power, confidence, intelligence, and kindness all at once. Coach Martin has this rare ability to use his words to light your soul on fire.

On my first day of practice I realized I was the slowest recruit. Some of my teammates were running training runs faster than I had ever dreamed possible, my eyes were opened to an entire new world of what could be achieved. I knew I was at the bottom of the totem pole and I didn’t mind it, if I wanted respect and recognition I had to get to work, so I did. Coach Martin’s training plan was harder than anything I had ever attempted, with exponentially more miles than I was used to. But he had sold me on chasing excellence and I was ALL in. By the end of my first year I had already run faster than I ever thought possible. At Adams State you’re taught to dream even bigger, completely reimagine what fast means and what’s possible.

Outdoor DII Nationals 2026

While I am disappointed with the result I can’t be disappointed with the experience. I learned so much and more importantly got to be surrounded by great people. To compete at my first national meet individually in my home state is something I’ll never forget. I made so many memories and it will be an experience I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. Here’s to cross country and getting fit 💚🐻it’s been a great year.
