Fish Skeleton (2026) has been produced as part of a series of works, newly comissioned for Slips Gilbert’s first solo institutional exhibition in Europe. At the centre of Slips is a newly commissioned site-specific photographic installation, which utilises the monumental scale of Flatland’s gallery space. The installation is an expansive collage of cut photographs and paper, swaying in the breeze and shifting with the natural light of the gallery space through the changing coastal autumnal and winter skies in Bexhill on Sea.

David Gilbert (b. 1982, New York, NY) lives and works in Los Angeles.

This edition has been generarously donated by the artist. The sale of editions from our shop go towards our artist commissioning programmes which we deliver in Bexhill for artists to explore new ideas, invest time into research and build new audiences.

I am pleased to announce “The Agony of Eros,” a group show I am curating at 69 art campus in Beijing. Borrowing its title from Byung Chul-Han’s meditation on modern love, the exhibition looks at ambiguity and opacity as positive aesthetic values of art and features work by 18 international artists. Please stop by this coming Saturday if you’re in town.

Bio: David Gilbert is an artist whose work sits at the unique crossroads of photography, sculpture, drawing, painting, assemblage, and installation. Using these media, he stages and photographs mise-en-scènes in the studio which read as traces of an action, an aftermath, something in progress, or some kind of stumbled upon incident. Characterized by a sense of open-ended mystery, the work embraces ambiguity as a generative, queer position. He is represented by Chris Sharp Gallery in Los Angeles, and his first monograph was published by Zolo Press earlier this year. This fall he will have his first institutional exhibitions in Europe: at Flatland Projects (England) in October and at Le MEP (France) in December.
Bio: Pau S. Pescador is a contemporary trans fem nonbinary artist who works in film, photography, and performance and lives and works in Los Angeles, California. . Chris Sharp Gallery is pleased to host a talk between David Gilbert and Paul Mpgai Sepuya this Sunday, November 16th at 4pm. The two first met 25 years ago as teenagers on their first day of college at NYU; they will talk about their work, friendship, and shared influences.

This event serves as the closing reception for Gilbert’s show, I Capture the Castle, at the gallery.

Paul Mpagi Sepuya just opened Excerpts & Fragments, an exhibition with LAND at 2413 Hyperion Avenue, and the show is up until December 21.

Please join us for the opening of David Gilbert’s stunning new exhibition, I Capture the Castle, today from 4 to 7.

This show is David Gilbert at his best. From thematic precision and variation to vertiginous plays on scale to photographic craft, the work is at once funny, sexy, ridiculous, lyrical, and heartbreaking. Never mind that he all but wholly invents the formal terms of his own work, obliging the viewer to learn his language in order to grasp what he’s doing. There is much to see here.
