6/6/09 a 13 year old Marcus ‘Groovyie’ Garcia was arrested and charged with a felony.

EXACTLY 17 years later I renewed my contract to teach creative writing inside of juvenile halls.

Having a record at such a young age alters the way a young person views themselves. Today 57% of incarcerated youth in San Bernardino County are Latino with about an 80% chance of returning back to prison. My first week of high school I had court - it was also my 14th birthday. I would either spend my entire freshman year behind bars or at a regular public school. Transitions for a teenager are already so tough, and in 2009 Fontana Unified School District didn’t exactly have the best resources to support young Black & Brown youth. Sitting in that cell, I didn’t really know what to think of myself. And I’d be lying if I said I stopped doing certain things after my arrest. I repeatedly made the same mistake for YEARS.

“Why do I keep making the same mistakes when I was a kid?” It wasn’t until my 5th year in therapy until I finally figured it out - I needed to change the way I viewed myself. I never forgave myself. I’m not the same kid that was doing 211’s. I’m not the kid that was homeless. I’m not the kid that got st*bbed. I’m not the kid that carried protection with him. I’m safe now. I don’t need to keep making sure of it. And most important - I’m not a criminal anymore.

2 Corinthians 7:10 NIV “”Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”

Today I’m a lot of things. A brother, community member, college graduate, producer, writer, rapper, model, teacher, runner, boxer, friend, mentor, believer, I also like to step outside and read at a cafe time to time.

Point is - LIFE CHANGES
