Creating a Just Future…One Thoughtful Detail at a Time.
When a mission is centered on creating a more just future, every design element should reflect that vision. For Avenue for Justice’s Anniversary Gala, under the design guidance of Melissa from Day Break Management Group, we blended contemporary LED lighting with elegant floral installations to symbolize innovation, hope, and growth. The glowing rings represented possibility and progress, while the lush florals brought warmth and humanity to the space—creating an atmosphere worthy of celebrating AFJ’s incredible impact.

It was an honor to help transform the vision into an unforgettable experience.

In honor of Essence Fest weekend. ✨ Here’s a recap of my first Essence Fest with @daybreakmanagementgroup where we had the opportunity to bring a celebration of excellence for Pfizer’s Global Black Community to life.

Watching an event go from ideation to execution never gets old and this one was definitely one to remember

Last Thursday, Avenues for Justice (AFJ) gathered at our Harlem community center for our Women’s Herstory Month panel—a powerful afternoon dedicated to celebrating voices, experiences, and leadership of women across industries and sectors.

AFJ’s Executive Director, Liz Frederick, opened the event by reading a poem born from a simple thought: When was the last time women were truly seen for who they are?

The panel was moderated by Pix11’s Monica Morales @monicamoralestv , and our panelists included:

Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson @bronxbpgibson

Inaugural Director of The Kinnect Foundation Emily Ades

Melissa Johnson of Yummy Tummy’s in Brooklyn @yummytummyskitchen

The Nourish Spot’s CEO Dawn Kelly @prmaven17 @thenourishspot

Daybreak Management’s Founder Melissa Best @daybreakmanagementgroup

Author and Mental Health Clinical Director Robin D. Stone @robindstonelmhc

Their insights highlighted the realities of navigating often-rigid systems which define success, while remaining true to self. Throughout the discussion one theme remained consistent: when women are given the space to tell their stories on their own terms, it creates ripple effects far beyond the room!

Melissa Johnson, Founder and Ceo of Yummy Tummy’s and field supervisor to several AFJ Interns in our HIRE Up internship placement initiative, shared how intimidating it was to start a business. She faced setbacks and challenges, all of which made her unsure if her business would succeed. Just last year she contemplated shuttering the doors to her establishment. However, as a result of her perseverance, she overcame several business hurdles and encouraged AFJ Participants to have confidence in themselves. Melissa Best, encouraged AFJ Participants to find that one passion that they are good at, home in on it, and work daily to master it. The panelists touched on the importance of mentorship and surrounding oneself with people that uplift your ambitions. Dawn Kelly, Founder of The Nourish Spot shared that “if you are in the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room!”

On Thursday, March 12th from 4–6 PM, AFJ’s Harlem Community Center will host our Women’s HERstory Month Panel featuring Bronx Borough President Hon. Vanessa L. Gibson, and moderated by PIX11 Investigative Reporter MONICA MORALES.

This conversation will center leadership, resilience, and the role women continue to play in shaping policy, business, media, and community.

Throughout history, women have documented injustice, challenged harmful systems, and carried the practical burdens that incarceration places on families. Today, women continue to lead across sectors, building opportunity, strengthening neighborhoods, and creating pathways forward.

We hope you will join us for an afternoon of reflection, insight, and community! RSVP is required, please email info@avenuesforjustice.org to save your spot.

If you cannot make it, we will be live streaming on IG Live! Stay tuned for more details.

In Dwell’s latest piece “Is Dignified Jail Design Even Possible?”, the article explores the intersection between design and the US prison system by taking a look at New York City’s controversial $16 billion effort to close Rikers Island and replace it with smaller borough-based jails, and questions whether humane design can truly exist within systems of incarceration.

Avenues for Justice (AFJ) Chief Program Officer, Gamal Willis, highlights their vital work we do in community-centered support and Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI). Gamal points out that while redesigning facilities might soften conditions, it doesn’t fix the systemic inequalities, violence, and stigma at the heart of our carceral system, and that real change requires investing in people, not just buildings.

This article is a crucial read for anyone thinking critically about what justice should look like and how we move toward solutions that truly support healing, equity, and safety.

A moment built around light, simplicity, and impact.

Design is more than what you see, it’s how a space makes people feel when they walk in. Creating this glowing focal point was all about capturing clarity, warmth, and forward thinking in one clean statement piece.
