One month of You Started It and apparently my 500th post! I’m going to be so honest with you, release week/month is hard. But there’s also so much that’s good about it. And here are a few highlights! 1. Me to husband: when you buy me release day flowers, show the florist what the cover looks like and get her to match it 🙂‍↔️ 2. Seeing my book in the store for the first time. 3. Signing copies. 4. The flowers again because we nailed it 😌 5. My first ever orange banner! 6. A heart cloud. 7. Me at my launch. 8. Me at my launch meeting the sweetest reader. And wearing my dad’s watch. 9. My cutie showcasing my books side by side. 🇨🇦 10. You Started It on a wheelie (right @daylafm ?) 11. VP of Ben Cameron Hate Club @skye_era_books being cute 12. Because some people have a problem with teenaged boys expressing themselves through dance. 📚🎤Jackie on why she decided to make protagonist Jamie of mixed identity and on her compelling view that people of mixed identity are not "half" of any cultural/ethnic identity: "They're whole [...] I don't want them to be like, I'm half Palestinian; I'm half Canadian; I’m half Irish, half whatever. I want them to be like, 'I'm Palestinian; I'm Ukrainian. I am all of those things." So true - can we really measure? What is the secret to Jackie's vividly real characters and conversations in her writing? She draws heavily from her own experiences and observations as a Palestinian Canadian woman bravely living with autism and anxiety. She also makes very conscious choices to include in her stories Arab lives that exist but that are rarely represented in literature. Diversity is very real in Toronto, and fiction that is set in Toronto and is intended to give an accurate sense of contemporary social life here without portraying diversity fails to capture Toronto in a realistic light.

I’ve been asked a few times about my book launch and here it is. I’ll be in conversation with Dayla who I met at my first book launch and since I don’t like change, I’ve decided to bring her back. Just kidding! We’ve become good friends and I know I’ll feel comfortable with her there by my side. So if you’re local, I’d love to see you there. We’ll talk. Sign copies. Avoid taking pictures. 📚My Reading Habits!

•Genre I tend to stay away from?

I think it's just true crime; I'm actively trying to read outside my comfort genres to be exposed to new things that I may not have naturally gravitated toward.

•Worst reading habit?

I got called out for it this week, so I think this may be it: not DNFing books that I don't like or am not enjoying which can lead to reading slumps for me.

•Do you read the synopsis?

Depends! If I'm being recommended a book, then never (which is primarily how I find new reads). But, if I'm browsing around then...sometimes. If I'm in a bookstore, then I won't. I'll just read the first few pages and see if it hooks me and if I like the style. But, if I'm shopping for books from an online publisher, then, yes, I do read the synopsis--unless I've already read (and enjoyed) the author, in which case I'll just add that right to my cart.

•Favourite from 2022?

Oooo. This is hard. I think it's a toss up between Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century by Kim Fu, Jameela Green Ruins Everything by Zarqa Nawaz, OR The Sleeping Car Porter by Suzette Mayr

•Current read?

So much. The Copyeditor's Handbook by Amy Einsohn and Marilyn Schwartz; The Subversive Copy Editor by Carol Fisher Saller; Both Can be True by Jules Machias; and more

•Next Read:

✨How would you describe your bookshelf aesthetic?

✨What genres do you have the most of on your shelves?

Definitely fantasy and sci-fi. See that shelf on the left? 100% fantasy and sci-fi separated from everything else to keep series together.

✨What do your bookshelves say about you?

Probably that I have a Type A personality and I have hoarder tendencies 👀

✨Favorite things on your shelves?

Aside from the books, definitely the heart ivy that's in the yellow pot. I've had it forever and it refuses to grow any other little vines other than the single strand of ivy. I love that single-minded determination.
