It's taken me all week to post this. Still in shock, kinda.

The shop officially opened on May 29th.

A package was delivered to the shop Monday - the first real mail that wasn't a bill or just junkmail....

Imagine my surprise when I saw the return address. I was stunned.
A package from my favorite band and the namesake of the shop!

THANK YOU @puppetsofmeat @dbostrom @criskirkwoodart @curtkirkwood @elmo_kirkwood @ronstabinsky
for the coolest, most unreal package ever!
WOW!
WOW!
The shop has been christened.

SO RAD!

NYC summer festival season started with the inaugural Total Bummer Festival a well-curated collaboration between @SaintVitusBar & @KnockdownCenter bringing a slew of legendary outsider noise rock/hardcore punk bands and newer artists who were inspired by them together for a 2-day, tightly-scheduled in the massive Queens arts complex.

Influential Phoenix, AZ-originated psychedelic/cow-punk band @PuppetsOfMeat (acolytes included Nirvana, Pavement, and their SST Records label mates & Total Bummer headliner @DinosaurJr.) performed in their original 1980 lineup of brothers Curt Kirkwood 🎤 🎸 & Chris Kirkwood bass/🎤 and @DBostrom 🥁, with newer members @Elmo_Kirkwood (Curt's son) 🎸 🎤 & @RonStabinsky 🎹 played a warmly-received set (their first NYC appearance since 2019) at the outdoor Ruins stage 🌴, including their biggest hit, 1994 single "Backwater" from the Too High to Die LP.

“It’s always nice to be recognized by one’s peers. But really, I’d like to see the list of the fifteen bands rated just right so that I can compare the two.”
Reached out to Derrick Bostrom, as one does, to see what he might have to say about Meat Puppets making a list of 15 badly underrated American bands put together by BBC Music Magazine, alongside such seminal underdogs as the 13th Floor Elevators, X & Big Star.
I myself prefer to think of things as “criminally underrated,” as though the people guilty of not rating something high enough should do some hard time to recalibrate their scales.
But maybe that’s just me.
There’s a link my bio that will take you to the article in full if you would like to see what Derrick had to say about the underrated honor AND the Rolling Stone punk album list at

Four Decades Of The Meat Puppets' Up On The Sun

While creatively capturing the culture’s minds and eager ears through their bombastic brilliance and tonal transportation to some faraway land where the sexuality of the skies meets the Dionysian dynamics of the desert, the band was coming into their own against the punk and new wave backdrop of the decade, with a spiritual sound that would go on to define another generation’s artistic approach to their craft. Hailing from the same scene that brought you the monstrous minds of Sun City Girls, Mighty Sphincter, J.F.A., Poet’s Corner, Killer Pussy, to name a few, the brothers of Meat have left their melodic mark of madness on the public’s prolonged psyche for nearly half a century, and the band’s third album is quite the trepidatious transition from their early work as the revolution of rhythm meets the radiation from the their sun drenched dynamics, and psychedelic performance.

Recorded in late January 1985 and released later that spring, the band returned to Studio Total Access in Redondo Beach, California, where they recorded their previous album “2”. “Up On The Sun” initially set out to be this "psychedelic epic" that would be carefully captured on an 8-track tape recorder within the sonic spirituality of the DIY methods the band’s generation had officially mastered in their artistic approach and anarchic attitudes towards their medium. Featuring tracks like“Hot Pink”, “Swimming Ground”, “Two Rivers”, and the album’s sublime opening title track, the music is soaked in sophisticated substance, spiritual style, and the timeless edge of one of the greatest decades. The Meat Puppets are a classic institution of American rock and roll, and thank God we have their catalogue to fall back on during the best of times and the worst of times.

Now reading at The Self Portrait Gospel.

“We moved into a place that was owned by Cris and Curt’s mom. People used to come in and out of the scene and we would sit at the kitchen table, smoke pot and draw pictures and play music. That’s what all young people should get to do when they’re, like, 20, 21 or so.”
Had a very entertaining conversation with Meat Puppets drummer Derrick Bostrom about “the good times before the pressure was on,” slipping CCR covers between early originals he that often amounted to “51-second scream fests” — those are Derrick’s words — as young punk making their own in Tempe, Arizona.
“That was our laboratory,” he says of those early performances.
There’s a link in my bio that will take you to the interview in full.

MEAT PUPPETS by Naomi Petersen. These are SST Promo shots in 1984 & 1985, with their Creem Magazine SST ad in 1985 (layout by Joe Carducci) and an LA Times article in April 1985. Band members are Curt Kirwood, Cris Kirkwood and Derrick Bostrom.

All photos by Naomi, who really loved these guys and their cowpunk/alternative style of rock! 😎🤠 And who can ever forget their 1993 MTV "Unplugged" collaboration with Nirvana, so forever iconic. Long live Naomi & the Meat Puppets! 🖤🖤
