A new study from Dr. Sagar Sengupta’s laboratory at BRIC-NIBMG, published in EMBO Molecular Medicine, offers promising insights into what happens when genetic mutations disrupt mitochondria’s ability to function properly?
Progressive External Ophthalmoplegia (PEO) is an inherited mitochondrial disorder caused due to mutations in POLGA gene. Treatment for PEO currently focuses largely on managing symptoms.

🔬 What did the researchers discover?

The team found that PEO-associated mutant POLG proteins form aggregates that interfere with their entry into mitochondria, disrupting normal mitochondrial function. Through small-molecule screening, the researchers identified compounds capable of breaking up these aggregates.
While further research is needed, the findings represent an encouraging step towards moving from understanding disease mechanisms to exploring therapeutic strategies.

A new beginning for cumin research in India!

Cumin, the golden seed of every Indian kitchen, now has its first global reference genome. Scientists at BRIC-Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (BRIC-CDFD), Hyderabad, sequenced the cumin cultivar GC-3 and assembled 1.277 billion bases, about 98% of the estimated genome. The genome is now listed at NCBI as the reference genome for cumin.

What this means:
- Nearly 30,000 genes and almost 300,000 markers, open to all researchers on Cumin GRDB
- A strong foundation for developing better cumin varieties
- A national digital resource built by seven institutions working as one team
