2009 Texas Golden Gloves Team National Team

Looking at this picture reminds me how crazy life really is.

Back then, we were just a group of young fighters chasing a dream. No guarantees. No money. No fame. Just work, sacrifice, discipline, and belief.

Some of us went on to become world champions.
Some became coaches.
Some walked away from the sport.
Some are still fighting different battles in life.

But this picture means something deeper to me now.

I started boxing at 20 years old.
Most people would say that’s too late.

But I still made it to the highest levels of amateur boxing and built a professional career before a career-ending eye injury changed my path.

That’s why I always tell people:
It is NOT too late to start.

Your timeline does not have to look like everybody else’s.

Boxing taught me discipline, structure, toughness, and grit.
But now as a coach, I’m learning another lesson:

Every fighter is different.

Not everybody responds to pressure the same way.
Not everybody learns the same way.
Not everybody has to be “crazy tough” to become successful.

For a long time, I expected everybody to have the same fire, grit, and mentality I had as a fighter.

But coaching has humbled me.

Real coaching is learning how to reach different people differently.
Some fighters need pressure.
Some need patience.
Some need confidence built into them.
Some need belief before they can become who they’re capable of becoming.

I’m still learning that.

And honestly…
that lesson has made me a better coach and a better man.

To every fighter out there:
Keep going.
Keep learning.
Keep growing.

It’s never too late to start your story.
