🇺🇸 This 4th of July marks the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, and to celebrate this landmark Semiquincentennial here is a look back at our own stateside connection!

Back in 2014 Sunderland City Council and our first Festival Director Anne Tye announced the creation of Sunderland Shorts Film Festival, with the first event taking place in 2015.
The event was was conceived in collaboration through Sunderland’s Friendship Agreement with Washington DC, where it was one of many creative industry initiatives developed through the partnership, which has seen creative professionals from both DC and Sunderland participate in exhibitions and academic exchange visits.

Historically Washington DC has a unique connection to Sunderland with George Washington’s ancestral home being Washington Old Hall.

Jon Gann of DC SHORTS worked with Anne and her team in Sunderland to support the development of the first festival, which took place in early July 2015. Films from all over the world were featured, and although audiences were small in the initial year, they showed the potential of a film festival in the city and formed a strong base on which to grow.

We have continued to follow the great work of DC SHORTS since, and have been very glad to bring so many fantastic films from America to be part of our programmes in the years since that initial collaboration.

@pathwaysdc has been critical in my housing. I have been able 2 publish 3 books on @xlibrispub by being housed! Also available on @amazonbooks! I felt great achieving those lifelong goals of finally putting out my entire collection of poetry throughout the years! This illustration I drew years ago in @streetsensedc goes perfect with my journey! Well, I'm here now! 🎉 @amazoninfluencerprogram
