It’s hard to miss the large @dotheroad and @trasheer murals up high at 6th & Rhode Island NW, but peek in at @electric_cool_aid and you’ll find even more art adorning the walls of this outdoor bar space. Featured artists also include @thejahone @dcsofaimeous @miztarious @maspaz @dentonburrows @mc__monster

Today’s the 160th anniversary of when President Lincoln signed a bill to end slavery in Washington, D.C., 8.5 months before the Emancipation Proclamation. A few things to know:

1) For decades, members of Congress proposed ending slavery in D.C., but only had enough votes in favor when Southern representatives seceded,

2) Purchasing and selling enslaved people was outlawed in D.C. in 1850, but was not in neighboring Virginia and Maryland,

3) The government compensated slaveholders at a much greater rate than formerly enslaved people. If you were emancipated, you could get $100 if you left the U.S. and settled in places like Liberia,

4) Emancipation Day was celebrated from 1866 to 1901 and stopped due to lack of support and resources. 2002 is when it was celebrated again,

5) It was made an official city holiday in 2005 and affects which day federal income taxes are due.

This adorable little building on the edge of Rosedale, at 712 15th Street NE (just south of the Starburst), used to be a church. Now it’s ready for living its next episode as a shop called @upnsmoke_dc. Their grand opening is this Friday, December 10. We’re told there will be a couple of events plus music and food all day. They will also be giving free gifts if you come by and support them.

(Big ty to @katrinamarie9 for her help in identifying the artist!)

A little obsessed with this building. A gentleman saw me taking pictures and started chatting about how much he liked it. He told me he worked at the Amazing Love Health Services building, “but I’m also a client.” It was lovely talking to you, Mr. Eugene. I don’t think you’re an android at all.

Anyone know the artist? I couldn’t find a stamp anywhere. Update: thanks to @katrinamarie9, now I know this is @upnsmoke_dc and the artist is @dcsofaimeous! Excellent mural. 11/10, will visit again soon.
