Join the DMA in supporting this local family! ¡Únense con la DMA en apoyar a esta familia local! One Saturday morning in October, Magdalena and Jose Luis, who have lived in Vancouver for more than 20 years, were drinking coffee in their home. On a quick trip to the curb to take out the trash bins, they were kidnapped by ICE. The family has been suffering without their partner and father, an incredibly hard-working construction worker and primary breadwinner; in addition, he was working around their apartment complex for a decrease in rent, but the landlord has recently taken away the discount. Magdalena has often had to work two jobs over the past months, and has struggled to afford Jose Luis’ lawyer, pay rent, stay on top of car maintenance, and support their children. His bond has been set for $24,000 - and while the family is thrilled at the possibility of being reunited with him after paying, this is an overwhelming amount.

Our free pantry has become a vital resource for families in our community. Each week, we are serving more and more households who are struggling to put food on the table. We rely entirely on community support to keep our shelves stocked. If you’re able to donate new, unopened food items, we would be deeply grateful. We are supporting families directly impacted by ICE enforcement, as well as local community members who have lost income and business as a result of these practices. The need is urgent, and every donation makes a real difference. Please help us continue caring for those who need it most. Together, we can make sure no family goes without food. With the speed and intensity in which we’re being bombarded by this onslaught of atrocities & groundbreaking news, the urge to pump out content to maintain relevancy is real. I had every intention of doing so myself Saturday, returning home from the labor against ICE event and immediately uploading clips to be circulated around online, and further “inform” people of what we all… Already know. This is F’d up Truly, what can my photos show you or my words tell you that you haven’t already heard? There’s no amount of teargas footage that should motivate you to take this seriously more so than fathers being ripped from their families, & agonizing screams of terrified women and confused children being abducted by armed men. The turnout at the rally and March was impressive. Thousands of people. I could see lines of bodies crossing the bridges along the way and crowds gathered from blocks away. The air was invigorating with a the swell of labor organizers & union members, children and pets, families and brave community members, all choosing to spend their weekend confronting authoritarianism. My initial reaction was hope, rejuvenation, yet also a lingering feeling… this could be ugly… I came away with two observations that predominantly spoke to me. First, I was relatively shocked at how ill-equipt people were for a stand-off with federal agents. While being sincerely impressed at the bravery and fearlessness of the community, I also recognize that isn’t a replacement for preparation, as we plant ourselves grounded in reality of the violence at which state oppressors will go to, in order to in their eyes, quell dissent. I don’t want to minimize the disgusting acts of shooting teargas and other harmful crowd control chemicals into a group of peaceful union members, some carrying their babies or walking with children. Unfortunately, they truly don’t care. It’s a bitter truth. But it’s one we must take to heart and be vigilant in navigating with events moving forward. Second, and this should be obvious, but we need to revoke the ICE facility permit. @revokeicepermitpdx portlanddsa @portlandgovmayor Continued in comments…

We strongly condemn the use of tear gas by federal immigration agents on the Labor Against ICE rally yesterday. This blatant violation of people’s civil rights is part of intensifying repression under the Trump administration, using ICE and CBP to brutally crack down on migrants and those who stand with them. Despite and because of the Trump administration’s brutality, the people’s movement is growing in strength and number. We must not only steel ourselves for the hard moments to come, but let them drive us to come together and build the mass movement to end fascism, exploitation, and oppression! ICE out of our communities! Hold ICE accountable! End fascist state terror!
