MYTH: Homeschooled students have a harder path to getting into college—or can’t apply to certain schools as freshmen. 🚨

Not true.

Homeschooled students can absolutely apply to college as first-year students—including to the University of California system.

But there’s an important piece parents need to understand:
As the homeschool parent, you’re also taking on many of the responsibilities a traditional school counselor would handle.

That means staying on top of:
📚 Academic records
📄 Transcripts
🎓 Course requirements
📝 Application materials
📊 Everything your student needs to show colleges they’re prepared

Homeschooling itself doesn’t have to stand between your student and their college goals.

Preparation and recordkeeping are key.

Homeschool parents: do NOT wait until junior or senior year to create your student’s transcript. 🚨

When your homeschool student applies through the Common App, you’re not just the parent—you’ll also typically be acting as the school counselor.

That means you may be responsible for submitting their official transcript and making sure everything is documented correctly.

And there can be a LOT to keep track of:
📚 Course names and credits
📊 GPA
⭐ Weighted coursework
📝 AP classes
🎓 Dual enrollment courses

Caitlyn Obolsky’s biggest piece of advice?

Start the transcript early and update it as your student progresses through high school.
Future you will be VERY thankful. 😅

Individual lessons are back up in the shop.
I've cleaned up some formatting errors & made sure that the introductions reflect the actual lesson.
I had been so excited to get these lessons into your hands that there were some inaccurate sections that I had re-used.
Those have been addressed.
Those of you who were early adopters -- I cannot thank you enough -- can find the updated version of the lessons via your Gumroad links & emails that were sent out earlier today.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.
I am so proud of what we're building with this curriculum. I cannot tell you fully. 🫶🏻

Which lesson would be most conducive to middle school ages as well as high school?

That's a question I considered thoughtfully when planning for a back to homeschool giveaway I am participating in this week. Full details available at @ddchomeschool

As part of the full semester, students encounter the Supreme Court after a deep dive into the constitutional underpinnings of separation of powers, including a close look at the Federalist Papers.

This lesson teaches them not only how the federal court system works, but also introduces them to each of the justices as well as an overview of various theories of judicial review.

It helps students conceptualize the role of the court within the U.S. legal system.

AI is actually exceptionally bad at making maps.

I wanted to make a circuit court map for American Law that I could include in the curriculum.

But it was so bad, I ended up linking to the one I found on a federal court website (final slide).

Maybe eventually I will go into Canva and do it myself. But until then, enjoy these exceptionally bad mockups!

I finally made it to the last lesson in year 1.

I know this post isn't optimized for the algorithm & it's kind of blurry and hard to read.

But I cannot tell you how proud I am of myself for this curriculum.

By the time your students get to this lesson, they will have so much knowledge and context. And I hope they will feel empowered to go out into the world and make changes, and fight systematic and other injustices.

And I am so grateful to be able to teach them through the words on the page.

What's the point of going to law school and becoming a lawyer if it isn't to leave things better than you found them?

Why is this taking so long? Because I get worried the students will want to know WHY the affidavit was insufficient to prove probable cause. So then I have to go and write a whole additional page about it. It's my toxic trait. 😂🫠

1 year ago today, I had this idea.

I wanted to create an in person law class for high schoolers, so that my teenagers could learn in community.

I would use my legal background to create all of the content.

At the first meeting, I asked the kids what they actually wanted to learn about, and my plans changed substantially.

My husband, also an attorney, was a huge help. He offered insights based on his 15+ years of litigation experience as well as why it might not be such a good idea to teach about the second amendment in a public space. 🫠

I cannot believe how far everything has come in the last 12 months! I am so so grateful for everything that Common Law Press has become, and I am thankful for every single one of you that has been on this wild journey with me!

Happy first anniversary to me! 💖

P.S. this makes me even more driven to the full year textbook of American Law I as fast as I can!
