Mark’s Kitchen: aka the best adult summer camp I’ve ever attended. 🦀🤌🏼

Put a bunch of wedding industry friends together for a summer sleepover, add incredible food, entirely too much fun, and a group of wildly talented photographers who casually bring their cameras, shoot the whole thing on film, AND develop it afterward?!

Twas a GREAT night. I loved this sleepover. 10/10, would summer camp again.

Mark’s Kitchen, you have my heart. Until next year, friends.

Now… BRING OUT THE DANCING LOBSTERS!! 🦞🦞🦞

This little camera has a story. My grandfather had one just like it—a Rolleiflex. He was a hobbyist photographer, the kind who built a darkroom in his basement and documented life with quiet care. His cameras were passed down through the family, though never to me. I used to wonder what it might feel like to photograph with something he once held. To bridge that quiet distance between who we come from and who we become. Not for the sake of nostalgia—but maybe to feel a little closer. Maybe to feel rooted.

He was so many things to so many people. Someone who made time for images in between everything else. And sometimes I wonder—what else was he? What kind of artist lived beneath the surface? What did he see that he never said? What did he photograph and never share? What part did he keep for himself?

So I found one for myself—a rolleiflex. Not his, but mine. Now I’ve been wandering life with this camera slung at my waist—chasing light, pressing pause, clicking my shutter, and making my own memories.

Because cameras were made to witness life, not collect dust. And some legacies, we build ourselves.

To the girl that calls herself Lurch and means it, the one I just happened to meet in Paris, because I’m pretty sure that’s where you meet girls like Ali, happy (belated) birthday! I thought it’d be the perfect time to talk about the reasons I’m so into her, and you should be too.

-She is goofy af. No, like literally. Could be giving Goofy from A Goofy Movie at any given moment.
-Her zest for life and new experiences. Settle for what?
-Obviously, she’s a style icon.
-She would FaceTime me to ask what time it is. She knows exactly what time it is. I think this is a key element in understanding her.
-It’s never weird to sit silently next to her. At least, it’s never weird for me.
-There’s a contagious restlessness you’ll get from her, and it’s a good thing.
-A true Gemini. You’ll never be bored around her (because if she’s bored, she will move on lol).
-Naturally talented. It really is that effortless for her. Rarely seen the girl sweat.
-An artists soul.

Ali is full of surprises and if you’ve ever been in front of her camera, or watched her work, I’m sure you get it too. HBD to the goofiest girl I know. Thank you for teaching me the art of spray tans, among other things. Everything would be way less fun and interesting without you. I’d find you in any life and tell you to leave me alone, but I would never, ever mean it. Let’s try and take a photo together this year. And also, it’s fine if you want to keep me a little less young. @alivaldez.photography
