My documentary short film, Shakal, will be showing this week @kampabc in Portland, Oregon. I met the subjects at a rural church in 2022 while I was photographing Dormant Season and I’ve been making still and moving images with them ever since. In the fall of 2024, I went to their farm with just my video camera and became part of their environment, like a stray animal who wandered in and never really left… I filmed this piece alone, and entirely without intervention or direction between me and the subjects. It was a devotion of patience and observation and understanding through looking, and waiting… long enough for a small miracle to occur. Moonfish World Premiere, Venice Film Festival 2026 As @labiennale comes to a close, it is time to reflect on what an extraordinary experience the past week (and year) has been. Moonfish has been the first ever animated project to be a part of #BiennaleCollegeCinema, the only animated feature at this #Venezia83, and my first animated feature as a producer. What else could we have asked for! A little over a year ago, I would have never imagined that this would happen, and I still don’t fully believe it did. Thank you to the dream team that made this miracle of a movie happen, especially our captain Daniel Zvereff who is honestly a genius (I can say this even if I’m biased) and my partner in crime Rebecca Wyzan. Thank you to Geoff, Sami, Devin and Hoss for believing in this project and working so hard to get it across the finish line. Thank you to Savina Neirotti and Jane Williams for creating and running such an unbelievable program, I am forever indebted to Biennale College Cinema and grateful to them for thinking that making an animated film in 9 months with a tiny fraction of (literally all) animated films was a good idea. Thank you to Alberto Barbera for making us feel so welcome at the festival. And thank you to our Biennale College cohort, Maria Giovanna, Raffaella, Humberto, Gabriel, Amie and Joyce, I am so happy we got to experience this moment together ❤️ I’m not sure what the future holds, but I hope it’s filled with many more movies and a lot of beautiful memories. #Venice #Biennale #Film
