Day 12 - “Inspirational” I love this book so much. I haven’t read anything else like it. I so recommend it! “It’s a story, and it’s an invitation to think about how we say goodbye.” Great for all ages! #octoberphotochallenge #peppertooth #peppertoothsdailyphotochallenge #ptdpc #inspirational

Things I’ve been doing lately as an End of Life Doula…

The Canny Death Collective is 7 women all working in different ways with death, dying and grief. We are doulas, celebrants, educators, funeral directors, natural burial ground owners and financial planners with a range of interests and passions including funeral poverty, affirming end of life care for LGBTQIA+ communities, eco endings, advance care planning and accessible end of life and grief care for learning disabled people.

We found each other through mutual admiration of each other’s work and over the past year or so we have organically developed into a collective.

The strength of this is that as a lone worker I now feel as if I have a team around me. When we deliver work together the impact is greater and the offering is more diverse. We collaborate on funding applications rather than compete for the same small pots of money. We share our joys and sorrows and feel held knowing that no one will try to fix things.

Since quitting my job and becoming a doula, being part of growing the collective is the best thing that has happened. Having a Friday meet up is a chance to fill my own glass so I have something to offer other people.

I love folklore and I bring it into my work a lot. Creatively looking at themes of beginnings, endings and transitions in folk tales has been something I have done with people to enable them to explore what they mean for themselves, but at a step removed by learning about different characters.

I also like the various superstitions that persist and the roots of these. One I read about recently was about catching falling leaves. Apparently it’s lucky, and the leaves of different trees bring their own type of luck.

I was out walking the dog this week on a windy day and I realised that lots of leaves were falling. This was my opportunity to catch one!

Well it’s harder than it sounds. Some float gently down and then suddenly veer off in an unexpected direction just before they reach your hand. Others plummet as if mad

Christa Pike was sentenced to death for the brutal 1995 murder of 19 year old Colleen Slemmer, a crime Pike committed at just 18 years old.

On September 30, Tennessee attempted to execute her by lethal injection. Two rounds of drugs failed to kill her. She survived and was taken to the hospital.

Pike committed a horrific crime. But if the state straps someone down, tries twice to kill them, fails, and may try to kill them again, something is not right. Is this an eye for an eye?!

Make it make sense.

SO MUCH NEW AT THE POETRY PHARMACY 💊📚

We’ve been very busy in our dispensary…

There are new Poetic Intelligence, Glimmers,The Reading Cure and Expiry Date Poetry Pills. Our own deliciously dark Poetry Poison anthologies and Poisons gift boxes, plus our new tongue-depressor bookmarks: Prescriptions for Finding Your Place.

And that’s only some of it. There are also bespoke bottles made and shipped and we love our collaborations.

There’s an awful lot that’s new, strange, beautiful and poetic on our shelves at the moment.

And did you know you don’t have to be anywhere near one of our dispensaries to get your hands on it?

🌍 We ship to most places in the world.

Apply directly to the affected area.

It was lovely to spend Friday lunchtime with valued peers from the Canny Death Collective Peers. Collective folk supported me in many ways and I appreciate them for it.

Having recently returned to work following a bereavement, being with people who get it means a lot.

In the photo are Karen from @tending_3magpies, Emma from @Dying2Help and me.

Also in the collective are KV and LV from
@deadgoodlegacies , @helenmelon67 and Sam from @sevenpennymeadow_goasyouplease

New!!! 'Expiry Date'

Our latest poetic treatment has arrived.

A poetic treatment for the incurably mortal.

Expiry Date is indicated for anyone experiencing an inconvenient awareness of the passing of time, anticipated loss, change, existential wobbles and the suspicion that life may not, in fact, go on forever.

For the gentle contemplation of mortality, the making of peace with impermanence & of what remains.

Created in collaboration with @deadgoodlegacies , the award-winning not-for-profit founded by sisters Katy and Lindsey Vigurs, who work to make conversations about death and dying more open, compassionate and less taboo, using creativity, curiosity and a refreshingly playful approach to mortality.

Dosage: As required.

Possible side effects: Increased appreciation of the present moment, spontaneous gratitude and an urge to stop putting things off.

Contraindications: None. Mortality is universal.

Storage: Do not store for later.

Available now from the Poetry Pharmacy online and in our bookshops from tomorrow.

13,716.

That's how many art classes I've taught.

And when I saw that number, I had a little bit of a bloody hell moment and cry - I knew it was big, but not that big😳

Years of teaching people to draw, paint, experiment, play with colour and, hopefully, feel a little more confident in their own creativity.

I've taught children, adults, complete beginners, people who told me they "can't draw" and people who just needed a bit of space to themselves.

And I think all of that has shaped the artist I am now.

Because these days, I'm not particularly interested in creating a perfect picture.
I'm interested in what happens when we slow down.

When creativity becomes a way of connecting with something a little deeper.

My own paintings have taken me somewhere unexpected over the years.

And I'm still following that thread.

I have a feeling there are some interesting things coming next… ✨
