A work of art. In more ways than one. This is Deaf Crocodile's Limited Edition release of SCARLET SAILS (1961), in which you can find my film commentary* that I hope becomes a gateway to Soviet cinema for some of you along with the incredible filmography of director Aleksandr Ptushko. This is a luscious film - beautifully shot and full of so much heart - not as epic and fantastical as his other works but equally rewarding. What is extra special is that the booklet inside not only has essays but also a wonderful tribute to artist Tony Stella who passed away in May. Sam Hadley's stunning tribute to Tony's contributions to the Ptushko library - and his huge contribution to the boutique scene in general - is spread acros the LE's slipcase. *I'm following Stephen R. Bissette on the previous Ptushko commentaries, who not only sets a high benchmark with his knowledge of cinema, but he's also someone I grew up on the work of in the pages of my one of my favourite comic book characters, Swamp Thing. @deafcrocodile @studiotstella @sam.hadley.illustration @stephenrbissette #sovietcinema #film #deadcrocodile #scarletsails
