In 2022 bestond @deafsluitdijk 90 jaar. @miekepeeters.vanberkel @paulderuiterarchitects #yttjefeddes #zeemanenburger @staetvancreatie #bouwconsortiumLevvel #gerardvanurk

What is the Afsluitdijk & Why is it Famous?

The Afsluitdijk is one of the Netherlands’ most important engineering achievements and has played a crucial role in protecting the country from floods for decades. The 32-kilometre-long barrier dam separates the North Sea from the IJsselmeer freshwater lake and shields low-lying Dutch regions from severe sea flooding.

Big water 💧challenges require bold engineering. Today, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Afsluitdijk dam in the Netherlands, a project that completely transformed Dutch water management. By creating a massive freshwater reservoir from the sea, it fundamentally altered our map🗺️, even changing the name of the water from the Zuiderzee to the IJsselmeer.

The visit is another step forward for our cooperation, as India is planning its own ambitious coastal reservoir projects.
With newly signed agreements on water collaboration, our water experts are ready to team up on water challenges. We look forward to sharing technical knowledge and working together on the future of water infrastructure.🌊🕶️

Two countries. One shared challenge: water💧
India is working to provide water security for 18% of the world’s population with only 4% of global freshwater resources.
The Netherlands has spent centuries learning how to live with water, fight water -and engineer around it.
Now the two are joining forces.
From the Ganga to high-tech flood protection.
From smart irrigation to climate-resilient cities.
From delta management to water innovation that can scale globally.
Because in the 21st century, water is not just a resource.
It’s strategy. Technology. Security. Growth.
And India and the Netherlands are building solutions together.
Stay tuned

A sea of light.
A call to act.

WATERLICHT shows how high the water may rise,
a silent warning made visible through beauty.

When cars become power, architecture becomes light. ✨
On the Afsluitdijk in the Netherlands, sixty floodgates from 1932 awaken at night.
Not with wires. Not with electricity.
But with the reflection of car headlights.

Each beam of light strikes tiny prisms in the architecture, igniting a futuristic landscape.
No cars means no light — and no light pollution.

What once held back the sea
now reveals a vision of tomorrow:
an energy-neutral landscape.
