I couldn't stop watching my husband.

Not because he was doing anything extraordinary. He was simply sitting in a little blues club in Clarksdale, Mississippi, smiling, grooving to the music and completely lost in the moment.

And I realized—I was watching the man I've loved for more than 30 years live one of his dreams.

We met at 19 and 20 and married at 20 and 21. We've spent most of our adult lives side by side.

At 30, we sold almost everything, loaded our four kids into an RV and traveled for nearly nine years.

Now our kids are grown, we're empty nesters, and somehow we're back living full time in an RV.

Let's just say we know A LOT about togetherness. We live in about 300 square feet and are together almost 24/7.

But something that's shaped our marriage is making space for each other's passions, hobbies and dreams—and getting to be there when those dreams happen.

For Vern, one of those dreams was experiencing the blues in the heart of the Mississippi Delta.

Then we walked into Red's.

Deak and Jessie Cotton were playing, and Vern lit up.

He smiled. He grooved. He took it all in. He just WAS.

And I found myself watching him more than the musicians.

After more than 30 years of marriage, I've realized one of the greatest gifts we can give each other is the encouragement to keep dreaming, growing and doing the things that make us come alive.

We support each other's hobbies. We push each other to try new things. We give each other room to grow. And through it all, we're each other's biggest cheerleader.

Maybe that's one of the secrets to marriage after kids.

Keep dreaming together, but never stop encouraging the person you love to chase the things that light them up.

Sometimes it's OUR bucket list. Sometimes you get the privilege of standing beside them while they check something off theirs.

Watching Vern that night reminded me:

I don't just want to grow old with this man.

I want to watch him LIVE.

And I want him to watch me
