He left everything, to feel something.

Billy Zane turns in an uncanny performance as icon Marlon Brando in Waltzing with Brando, the story of an uninhabitable Tahitian island, an idealistic architect (played by Jon Heder) and a dream of the perfect paradise.

Our key art sets out to capture the many layers and facets of Zane’s performance in this heartwarming drama from director Bill Fishman.

Thanks @deanbloxom, @mcvcm and @vmiworldwide for making us an offer we couldn’t refuse. And to @billyzane for his passionate and enthusiastic support for the poster art. 🏝️

Waltzing With Brando review

Waltzing with Brando is based on the novel “Waltzing with Brando: Planning a Paradise in Tahiti” by Bernard Judge. It’s adapted for the screen and directed by Bill Fishman. The film follows movie star Marlon Brando (played by Billy Zane) and Los Angeles architect Bernard Judge (played by Jon Heder) as they attempt to create the world’s first ecologically perfect retreat on a remote island in Tahiti.

On a surface level, the film impresses. The makeup and production design are remarkable, Billy Zane is almost unrecognizable, and his recreation of Brando’s voice and cadence is spot-on. But aside from Zane’s performance, there’s little else here that feels alive.

The screenplay is the biggest issue. Bernard Judge doesn’t make for an interesting protagonist, and shockingly, neither does Brando, a man whose life was nothing short of controversial and extraordinary. Instead of offering insight into his activism, spirituality, or artistic struggles, the film largely reduces him to eccentric quirks and goofy antics. Scenes drag on without purpose, often resembling filler sketches rather than building a compelling story.

The choice to rely on near-constant narration only makes things worse. Instead of trusting the audience to pick up on themes, the film spoon-feeds information, draining the story of nuance. Attempts at humor fall flat as well, characters rarely act like real people, which undercuts any emotional weight the film might have carried.

Even when the story brushes against something meaningful like Brando’s role in Last Tango in Paris, the controversy surrounding that production is completely ignored, a glaring omission that makes the film feel shallow and sanitized.

Ultimately, Waltzing with Brando struggles to justify its existence. It gestures toward Brando’s larger-than-life legacy but never digs deep enough to illuminate who he really was. Zane gives a strong performance, but one great impression can’t save a film this underwritten. Instead of a semi-decent Brando biopic we’re left with something that plays more like an extended SNL sketch than a portrait of one of cinema’s greatest actors.

In 4 days, the lights go down, the curtain goes up, and a new Brando story begins. 🎬✨
Waltzing with Brando opens September 19 — the untold true story of Marlon Brando’s boldest vision, brought to life by Billy Zane in a transformative performance. 🌴🔥
#WaltzingWithBrando #BillyZane #InTheatersSept19

WALTZING WITH BRANDO follows Brando (Zane) — then the most famous actor in the world — as he filmed Mutiny on the Bounty and bought a tiny and uninhabitable island in Tahiti. His intent was to escape his hectic Hollywood lifestyle and show the world the path to sustainability. To achieve this goal, he plucks Judge (Heder), an obscure but idealistic Los Angeles architect, from his stable existence and convinces him that together they could build the world’s first truly sustainable ecological retreat.
