Does your athlete enjoy playing, or do they feel like they’re supposed to?

Cathy asks Dean Cooper about the players who genuinely enjoy the game. Dean calls that enjoyment a “cheat code.” When an athlete wants to be there, the practice and repetition have a different meaning. They’re putting in the work because they care about getting better.

Cathy also talks about respecting the game and what it gives back. That’s worth remembering when an athlete starts to resent playing because things aren’t happening the way they hoped. Before asking them to work harder, it may help to understand how they’re feeling about the game itself.

A coach can give the right feedback and still lose the athlete in the delivery.

Dean Cooper has learned this across years of coaching, from high school basketball to the NBA. He talks about being careful with the words you choose, your tone, and how you speak to players. Younger athletes are learning to read all of it.

Telling someone to ignore how a message was said doesn’t erase its impact. If we want feedback to help, we have to think about how it will be heard.

If you’re a coach working on how you connect with your athletes, we’d welcome the conversation.

A full day in the gym doesn’t always mean a day of progress.

Dean Cooper calls it “chewing gum”: plenty of motion, but little change. His question for athletes is more useful than “How long did you practice?” It’s “What were you trying to accomplish, and what did you get done?”

Dean Cooper talks about why he pays attention to his words, tone, and delivery, especially with younger players. A coach may know exactly what needs to change, but the athlete still has to be able to hear and use that message.

With experience coaching from high school through the NBA, Dean has seen how much communication matters at every level. Being direct and being thoughtful about delivery can go together.

If you’re a coach looking to make practice more intentional for your athletes, let’s talk. Schedule a free 1:1 session: https://calendly.com/bearcatcoaching/coach-program-director-consult

After coaching at the high school, college, and NBA levels, Dean Cooper keeps coming back to one simple coaching habit: notice what an athlete does well and help them do it again.

Dean Cooper points out how easily coaches and parents can focus on what went wrong.

Corrections have a place, especially when a problem keeps appearing. But he also wants to catch an athlete doing something well, name it, and help them repeat it.

That balance can change how feedback feels and how much an athlete learns from it.

If you’re a coach thinking about the kind of feedback your athletes hear every day, let’s talk.

“When should I push my athlete?” It’s a question many parents ask with good intentions.

That desire usually comes from wanting to help. But no single answer fits every athlete or situation. Dean talks about paying attention to how we guide a young person toward the work, so they can begin to take ownership of it themselves.

It’s a difficult balance: being present, encouraging effort, and leaving room for the athlete’s own motivation.

If you’re trying to find that balance with your athlete, let’s talk.

What does it mean to “overachieve”?

Dean Cooper examines that word closely. His point is that an athlete can work toward the full extent of their ability, but they can’t achieve beyond what they’re capable of. They can discover more of that ability through effort.

He’s careful about the other side of the conversation, too. Not reaching 100% doesn’t make someone a failure. Even getting close can represent a great deal of work and growth.

If you’re a coach thinking about how you talk to athletes about potential, we’d welcome the conversation.

Just because an athlete can play up, does that mean they should?

Dean Cooper talks about how much difference even one year can make when players are young. A child may be able to compete with an older group, but that’s only one part of the decision. They’re also developing confidence, skills, and the ability to read the game.

The question is what environment will help this athlete grow right now. Development doesn’t have to be rushed to be meaningful.

If you’re weighing that decision for an athlete, let’s talk it through. Schedule a free call: https://calendly.com/bearcatcoaching/general-inquiry

It’s been a hell of a ride ❤️ 🙏🏻

Thanks to everyone who’s made our lives great over the last 10 years. Thank you and we love you. Know that we think about you all the time.

It has been a great journey. From Asbury, to The Hill, to A-State. I’m one of the lucky ones.

I hope you all know how much my family and I care about you.

It’s time to hang it up. The price is just to high and I need to be the father, husband, etc. that I need to be.

Time to head back to the crib. Love you all!

👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻
