In 2019, @deanjfhoy was watching videos of animals burning. “It was the [Australian] bushfires, and I was looking at how the ones humans care less about get left behind, whereas the koalas were on the front page of every newspaper,” the artist said, a subtle bitterness rolling over his enunciation of ‘koalas’. Something moved him about the items that had been discarded and forgotten.⁠

Hoy was raised in Kent by a taxi-driver father and carer mother. After a childhood of “always making shit", he moved to London to study Fashion Communications at Central Saint Martins. Today, Hoy’s practice involves soft sculpture, photography and costume, and includes his Bears Who Care series—a band of anthropomorphised stuffed animals that have been torn apart, inverted and stitched back together.⁠
⁠
@sharynbudiarto met Hoy at a garden cafe in Peckham, where he sat cross-legged in a blue-grey Henley and mini shorts. In his slow and soothing Kentish accent, the former Sarabande resident spoke about the Bears Who Care extended universe, his favourite movies that range from horror to Scooby-Doo 2, and the desire for his art to “tug on people’s heartstrings.”⁠

Honesty is not always stereotypically beautiful and neat, not always favorable to the ordinary viewer’s view. As a consequence of the characteristics of Asian culture in the 21st century is born “frightening sincerity” whose purpose is to show flaws, make the “non-perfect” new “ideal”, speak about life experience, not be ashamed of appearance and identity and build a new understanding of beauty and harmony with the world.
