#albumaday: Dean Ween Group, The Deaner Album

Been thinking about Mickey lately. I hope he’s doing OK.

During Ween’s breakup/hiatus in the early 2010s, he and the rest of Ween (minus Aaron/Gener, of course), were playing A LOT of gigs. Sometimes swapping in guest artists from the New Hope/John & Peter’s scene (like Joe Kramer, Bill Fowler, and fellow Moistboyz bandmate Guy Heller). And, as a Ween fan who refused to just sit and wait it out, I got out and saw them. A lot. Opening for Primus in Big Flats, NY, in NYC at the McKittrick Hotel roof bar, with Claypool/Lennon at The Cap… and, yeah- at the aforementioned J&Ps. And it really was kind of special. A true lemons-to-lemonade situation. We happy few Ween fans who bothered to make the treks out to support Deaner & the boys were treated with some serious rock and roll, in no small part due to the inclusion of the aforementioned New Hope musicians (I’ve asked this before, but it bears repeating- what the fuck are they putting in the water in eastern Pennsylvania? Music steroids? For fuck’s sake, man. But I digress…), but mostly because Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo was, quite simply, born to crush everything he does with that Fender Strat.

This album was recorded by all the above people, and more, and released in 2016. By that time, Ween was back at it, but The Deaner Album stands, for me anyway, as a reminder of that nebulous time when I went out of my way to support a bunch of dudes who don’t know who the fuck I am, partly because it felt like the right thing to do… but mostly because of the quality rock and fucking roll.

Anyway, it’s now 10 years later, and this time around the hiatus doesn’t come with a side of semi-Ween (huh huh…), so I’ll just keep spinning the records, watching the videos, and listening to the endless library of live shows from a band who’s had an open-recording policy since the beginning (archive.org, yo!). God Save the Ween.

Michael Melchiondo Jr better known as Dean Ween was born on September 25, 1970. He is best known as the guitarist, singer and a founding member of the band Ween. In 1984, Melchiondo met Aaron Freeman in a junior high school typing class, in their hometown of New Hope, Pennsylvania. The two adopted the fictitious surname Ween after the demon-god Boognish appeared to them, with Melchiondo taking up the name Dean Ween and Freeman the name Gene Ween. Ween self-released several cassette albums from their formation until 1989. Afterward, they put out three officially-released lo-fi albums: GodWeenSatan: The Oneness ; The Pod and Pure Guava. In 1991, Dean Ween formed the punk rock duo Moistboyz with Guy Heller. Dean is an avid fisherman and in 2009, received his captain’s license and regularly leads fishing trips off the Jersey Shore as Mickey’s Guide Service. In 2012, in the wake of Ween’s breakup, Dean formed The Dean Ween Group. After a 28-year run, Gene Ween quit the band in 2012. Ween reformed in late 2015 and toured extensively without plans to record new material, but later entered an indefinite hiatus in 2024 citing Dean’s mental health as a reason. Here’s to the brilliant and incomparable Dean Ween. We love you! 👊🏾 #deanween

Happy Birthday, Deaner 💩📛✨

I took this of you at @riot_fest 2019 as you took the stage with Ween. We were all happy to see you happy. That’s all we ever really want, Mick. We all hope you’re doing well and we’re sending you so much love @deanweengrp @weeninfo #mickeymelchiondo -XO from a large swath of assholes who think you’re pretty goddamn good at guitar music.🎸🎶

Who else would tell us we might have lymes disease when times are tough? WHOMST else??

My favorite story you’ve ever shared isnt playing pool with @bustarhymes (but it’s pretty far up there), after getting boo’ed off opening-or when you stole Santana’s guitar for the Transdermal recording, but when you talk about the brotherhood of your bandmates. Europe + Australia tour diaries are so good, Mang🤠. The “Berlin tail-lights Gener British accent one” is so ween, it’s gotta be my fave. I can picture it in my lion’s eye. Happy Birthday, MM💛💛💛

8/22 Berlin Arena (with Foo Fighters)
“The ‘Berlin Arena’ sounds really nice doesn’t it? It was an empty hangar, (or warehouse) with big puddles of water on the floor. Probably could hold 12,000 people. As you can imagine, it sounded like shit, the Foo Fighters fans hated us, and we really didn’t give a flying fuck.
Someone smashed out the tail light lenses on our bus, and despite our denials, our bus driver seemed absolutely positive that it had to be one of us who did this. All communication between band and driver ceased after Berlin, except when Aaron would address him..... in a poor British accent. On top of all this, Paul Monahan dislocated his knee while loading out. All the doctors gave him were muscle relaxers, much to my disapointment...l ate them anyway, but they didn’t do shit. “- @monster_fresh thx tor the summary.
