Grenadierhöhe - Tannenbergstellung, 29 Juli 1944

————————————
Part 2 coming out soon, so stay tuned!

————————————

After attempts at a frontal breakthrough failed, in July 1944 the Soviets concentrated a massive volume of artillery and air power on Narva, reducing the medieval city to a heap of smoking ruins. To avoid encirclement, General Steiner ordered the III SS Panzer Corps to withdraw strategically to a defensive line about 20 km to the west—the so-called Tannenbergstellung—anchored on the Sinimäed heights (the “Blue Hills”). Three strategic hills formed the core of the defense: Orphanage Hill (Kinderheimhöhe), Grenadier Hill (Grenadierhöhe), and Hill 69.9 (Liebesberg). Estonian troops from the 45th and 46th Regiments, alongside Nordland combat engineers, dug in on Grenadier Hill. From July 26 to August 10, 1944, one of the bloodiest and most concentrated battles of the Eastern Front raged there; entire Soviet divisions, supported by massive formations of T-34 tanks, advanced against individual Estonian-German battalions. On Grenadier Hill, Estonian volunteers repelled dozens of assaults at a staggering cost, suffering losses of between 50% and 60% of their effective strength. Even the lightly wounded refused evacuation, choosing instead to remain in the trenches and keep firing. Between July 29 and 30, a desperate counterattack led by Sturmbannführer Paul Maitla and the reserves of Hando Ruus’s fusilier battalion retook the hilltop, definitively halting the Soviet advance. Both Maitla and Riipalu were awarded the Knight’s Cross for their heroic role in the defense of Sinimäed.

Good evening everyone.
Not a reenactment post today but a historical post.
Here are the photos of the execution that took place on May 10, 1945, in Czechoslovakia, that was carried out by the Czech resistance against three officers and several soldiers, all belonging to the 20 Wf.Gr.Div. der SS “estnische nr.1”. The Estonians were retreating into Czechoslovakia and were captured near the town of Nymburk on May 9, 1945. The next day, they were executed by partisans, violating Article 13 of the Geneva Convention, to which both Germany and Czechoslovakia were parties.
May god bless them.
